‘In truth I don’t really enjoy watching England anymore as we won’t win anything with Southgate in charge’

Stop talking our country down and hoping we fail just to prove a point.

I think the days of Nations (risible inappropriate hosts aside) making up the numbers at World Cup Finals are over.

They are all much better coached and organised generally and few are easy to beat.

The betting suggested 1-0 or 2-0 as joint favourites and 6-2 was a mighty effort against Iran.

This is a much more cavalier England squad, it’s not strong defensively so it just sets out to outscore the opposition.

A Brazilian-style ethos in some ways.

I thought Gareth Southgate was a singularly uninspired appointment at the time, but he’s proved me wrong time and time again.

We don’t have a divine right to win anything – we were hosts and in the Final were awarded a crucial goal that wasn’t a goal the only time we ever won it.

Southgate has the best overall record of any England Manager ever and it looks like he’s brought the squad to concert pitch at exactly the right time.

I don’t carry your optimism Ian.

Iran were very poor, but still managed to score two goals.

When we come up against a decent well organised team, we’ll be found wanting and Southgate does not have the tactical nous to alter things.

    Hope I’m wrong of course!

Didn’t Southgate get England relegated from the Nations League just the other week
They took a pasting from Hungary
Defence has also been a problem and they have two very good keepers in reserve, yet Southgate will continue to pick Pickford. Maguire is another woefully out of form and match fitness that Southgate picks blind.
    It will backfire

Yes they did and last Monday’s win was the first in the last seven games. Hungary put 4 past us, not great!

    “Iran were very poor”

Those plucky underrated Iranians looked alright today.

Collateral form suggests a six-nil victory for England against Wales!

Nathan, Gareth is the Mark Prescott of football managers.

Who cares about the UEFA Nations League?

Totally the wrong trip and ground for England who have clearly been laid out for this tournament ever since the last one.

It’s really important to be rubbish between major tournaments and only just qualify for Finals – it’s a momentum thing.

He’s also got a “you score, we will score more” strategy because that defence isn’t going to get any better.

Shame about Qatar scoring a goal – oh, well, you can’t have everything.

“He’s also got a “you score, we will score more” strategy”

Not against the better teams, he hasn’t. England tend to be far more defensive when they face stronger opponents.

They’re pretty much the archetypal flat-track bullies.

Well, they certainly weren’t scoring for fun against “Yu! Ess! Ey!” tonight, Gladders.

The USA’s record of never having lost to England at the World Cup remains intact.

A poor performance, arguably lucky to get out with a draw but we’re through to the next round bar an absolute catastrophe against Wales. Still, gives the doom mongers something to moan about so a result all round.

The objective is to get out of the group, preferably in first place, and both are long odds on. Plenty of teams have won the tournament with a draw or even a loss in the group stage. Many have won every group game and been knocked out. It’s not an indicator either way.

Hope you haven’t jinxed it, Rich  But seriously we should beat Wales, unless your Welsh in which case.

Think the women’s team can pull off their World Cup though.

As Richard perhaps implies, winning these major tournaments is about momentum, few World Cup winners play the opposition off the park in every match and England have at least avoided defeat here, a fate that befell both Germany and Argentina in recent days.

But I think the Wales match will now be tough – any squad which has lacked a meaningful goal threat in their previous match and proved vulnerable at the back in the previous game to that cannot be entirely relied upon to deliver.

This will now be Wales’s Final – let’s hope it’s not England’s too.

Lived in Wales for a time Rummy, highly recommend walking around in an England rugby shirt during the Six Nations. If you want to know the mentality of some there, one of the pubs would go out and buy the flags of England’s three group stage opponents each football tournament. I was not playing my tiny violin for them yesterday.

‘England have at least avoided defeat here’

The commentators actually made a good point on that for once. It’s not just the point England got, it’s two that USA didn’t get. When there are only nine available, two is a lot.

Fair point about the lack of goal threat but that applies even more to Wales. A penalty is all they have to show in three hours. However nothing motivates a Welsh sports team more than three lions or a red rose on the opposition’s shirts so I think they will improve but ultimately not enough.

This stage of the tournament is really just making sure you get through the group. The draw means England have done it, barring a freak set of results. It was an insipid performance but perhaps not as terrible as some of the more excitable commentators in the media are suggesting.

It would be quite funny if England and Wales draw and Iran beat America. That way, Iran would finish top of the group after starting with a 6-2 thrashing.

I’d say the hilarious denouement CAS alludes to is not entirely beyond the bounds of possibility – it’s only about 18/1 for the double!

Granted, past winners have struggled in their groups before winning the big one. Italy and Germany are/were past masters of starting slowly and gaining momentum.

But this is England we are talking about and against a well organised team Wokegate was devoid of any ideas as usual.
Just one win in eight games now is not a blip.

    They were thoroughly exposed.
