“Will Qatar even qualify on merit for another Finals this century?”

The fact that they have never even come close to qualifying on merit for the finals is just one of the many reasons that they shouldn’t have been awarded the tournament in the first place. Comparisons with Russia were made earlier on in the thread but at least they have been playing football there for 100 years and have performed well on the international stage at club and country level, unlike these money-grabbing Johnny Come Latelys.

I’m still watching it though, what impact would it have if I shunned it?

Just to clarify for the bewildered – England won 6-2 today, not 36-2.

30 of those “goals” you saw during the match were replays from five different angles.

Neither side settling for the draw – fair play, end-to-end stuff to the whistle.

John Hartson nearly had me reaching for the Ian Davies Button™. To think Wales and Scotland used to complain about biased English commentators.

I find my beloved mute button equally useful for football.

I’ve seen plenty, but haven’t heard a word so far.

BANKERS BUILDERS AND BREXITEERS have been letting their hair down and thumping the table, spilling their very pale ales, and cheering for England as if they are part and parcel. They call themselves the three musketeers, the new energies, and the saviours, and all have the firm belief they are doing their bit to build a BIG BRITAIN – but behind the twitching curtains small people hiss the word ..

“I find my beloved mute button equally useful for football”.

It’s awful. I wouldn’t mute as I want to know who is kicking the ball/fouling/being fouled etc and can’t always tell (not that they always tell you – usually banging on about some irrelevant nonsense rather than commentating on the actual game). That said, Roy Keane is always worth a listen.

“I feel blessed that Hartson is Welsh”

I watched the Wales/USA match last night, and when Wales equalised Hartson seemed to morph into Rhod Gilbert 😉 his accent ‘grew’ really strong, with the excitement :good:

I wonder if at any point the racing industry and/or its print/broadcast media will ever become even a tiny bit embarrassed about its association with Qatar?

The thing that i am finding really hard to fathom is why, 12 years on from Qatar being given the World Cup for 2022, has the ‘world’ waited for nigh on 12 years to really ramp up their opposition to Qatar hosting the tournament?

A number of countries and their international football associations have expressed horror at various aspects of Qatari ‘life’, rules, laws, etc. culminating in the armband ‘episode’.
    But
Why did they wait so long?
Why didnt those countries opposed to it threaten non-participation in the qualifying process for 2022?
Were those associations constantly venting disapproval to FiFA throughout the last 12 years?

Why has all the ‘opposition’ and furore seemed to have manifested itself in the last few weeks?

    I’m baffled, quite frankly.

EDIT: i found this extract from an article in The Guardian, 3rd December 2010.

“And how a strict Muslim state will negotiate western mores – homosexual behaviour is illegal there, as is kissing in public”

This was the only mention in the Guardian article of values, etc. The article homed in, mostly, on stadiums, the heat, 1st WC in the Middle East.

So, even The Guardian, back in 2010, wasnt really spending any real ‘time’ on the controversial stuff.

“I wouldn’t mute as I want to know who is kicking the ball/fouling/being fouled etc”

You see, this perfectly reasonable and logical explanation I can relate to.

Factual information, conveyed simply and directly, is always welcome.

But such functional factual reporting seems to be dying – especially in the racing media.

Simple, useful to know, things like where a horse is most likely to run next, and it’s best (not worst) ante-post odds seem to have been drowned in a sea of human-interest stories.

Most people watch racing because they bet on it – so provide punters with a constant flow of relevant useful information.

The World Cup, on the other hand, has a more eclectic audience – they don’t all spend their lives in between watching live matches playing Fifa or FM on PlayStations.

Simply tell them what they’re watching.

‘Why didnt those countries opposed to it threaten non-participation in the qualifying process for 2022?’

I’ve mentioned this before, I think Norway were making noises about a ‘boycott’. Firstly they were fairly certain to not qualify by that point and they had of course taken part in the process. The qualifiers effectively form part of the tournament so it’s too late by then.

In fairness some of the controversy hadn’t happened yet such as the appalling treatment and deaths of foreign workers and it was still assumed to be a (northern hemisphere) summer tournament when awarded. It’s definitely been ramped up too late though.

As for John Hartson/Rhod Gilbert, I made that very observation in a WhatsApp group last night
