Fair enough, there’s invariably an exception to any rule.

It’s probably the scruffiest goal he’s scored his entire career, but that might just be the winner.

Not for the first time – nor, he’ll warrant, the last – Chezza spoke.

    Too soon.

I called game over to some mates after about 65 toothless minutes from France Ian. Despite the current shortage, there’s plenty of egg on my face. Extraordinary match, especially for a final.

That ultimately would be the most gripping (though as you say it didn’t look that way for over an hour) World Cup Final I have ever seen in my life thus far.

I’m glad I greened up on my France bet and could enjoy the match as a neutral.

Argentina, like so many and indeed themselves in the past, grew into the tournament and got better as it went on.

Shame the horrible hosts scored a goal in the Group stages, but you can’t have everything.

From a purely footballing perspective the whole tournament has been bloody brilliant. My expectations were low and I wasn’t very hyped up for it as I posted at the start so maybe that helped.

Like Richard I had zero expectations, had the whole thing on on mute in the background, but took progressively more notice.

When into these things, I normally enjoy the novelty of the initial Group stages the most and get a bit crestfallen when teams start going home left, right and centre and the brutal knock-out stage gathers pace.

But not this time – it got better and better, I think the best two Nations these last few weeks contested the Final.

And I think, on the day, the best Nation won it – by dint of the fact they won it.

    Very narrowly.

It is, for sure, a game of fine margins.

Turned out to be a thrilling match. In the end, I was swaying for France to win because Argentina are (and always will be) a team who infuse dirty tactics to win. Messi is too good and honest to be an Argentine player as far as I’m concerned.

Kylian Mbappe is a supreme talent. Supercool and outright lethal.

Sums it up well. France did well to get all the way to penalties despite only turning up 10 minutes from time (the first penalty was I think their first shot on target, maybe even their first shot). As Rob says, that was the supreme talent that is Mbappe dragging his team back into it. Argentina the better side this evening, and overall deserved. Just. Top level sport is as Ian says a game of fine margins.

Speaking of which, straight onto the darts :yahoo:

Finals of anything are usually a let down but this was magnificent. I wanted France to win so that England had gone out to the best in the world. There was no way we were ever going to beat a team with Mbappe in. I had no knowledge of him prior to this tournament but what a talent. £4 million a month he’s worth! No wonder. At least we won the play fair award. I’m proud of that. Has anyone watched ‘The Keeper’ on iplayer about Bert Trautmann?

Agree Moehat. World Cup finals in particular are usually a huge anticlimax. I had a few small bets at the start for interest and had France at 8-1. Already collected on a France v Argentina final though so still enjoyed a superb match with worthy winners and happy for Messi.

France seemed inexplicably lethargic for the first 75 mins. Griezman, up till now the player of the tournament, was almost invisible, and subbed at ~ 60 mins; a brave substitution that almost saved it for them. I wonder were stories about a virus in the camp a factor.
Argentina deserved it, better team on the day

Twelve goals across the past two finals. If you keep counting back, you get all the way back to the second half of the 1986 final before you hit the previous twelve.

I’m sure I could be a statistics bore in another life

I know some people here will not want to look at a story in the “Daily Mail” but I was amused by some of the comments which are so ignorant about betting.

This was very obviously a related bet. Coral did not cover themselves in glory taking it but the fellow must be an absolute mug if he thought he was going to get paid.

It was an in shop bet.
Staff don’t even look at the bet slip half the time.
