Following recent fiascos involving amongst others AP McCoy, Nicky Mackay & Richard Johnson regarding the farcical whip rules, both Dave Yates on Saturday and Jim McGrath today have intimated that the BHA’s reluctance to change the rules is down to certain individuals at BHA headquarters, whose "heads would have to roll" if this happened according to Yates.
McGrath says "Let’s be honest, the BHA has backed itself into a corner. The remedy is easy – ditch the new rules now. Sadly spin and the potential ramifications, let alone loss of face, mean in reality the agonising is likely to continue".
I’ve heard others make similar comments but if this is true is it acceptable?
We are used to this sort of behaviour in politics but why should we have to put up with it in horse racing?

Clearly it is a matter of opinion whether you consider these to be a ‘fiasco’ or ‘farcical’. They might be to people like Yates and McGrath who have their own agenda – you could just as easily have asked ‘are the views of McGrath and Yates bigger than the sport’? For me these few bans certainly haven’t overshadowed some high quality racing despite certain presenters doing their level best to give that impression.
