For too long now, the racing media has been myopically-obsessed with the Cheltenham Festival to the exclusion of all else in the Jumps season.

Well, if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.

And what better Flat event to give the same treatment than the Shergar Cup?

    The journey commences here.

Feel free to use this thread – odds-on to disappear into oblivion like so many of its predecessors – to offer your thoughts along the way, your hopes and aspirations for next year’s renewal of this, the crown jewel of the Turf Flat season.

Will it lead to Great Britain and Ireland merging as nations to form one State?

Will it help the rest of the world put any differences aside and unite?

Will it strengthen the European Union?

And will it assist in the quest to find a universally-acceptable name for those who, whatever they actually are, definitely aren’t male?

One last thought: if, in fact, you despise the Shergar Cup, please remember its greatest redeeming feature….it’s NOT The Racing League.

Its quite clear that the fairer sex (if thats ok to say), have been whipping the backsides of the Gents in the other teams. In order to even up this amazing racing spectacle, the Europe, GB&I and ROW teams should for 2024 be allowed to include at least one of the fairer sex in their respective teams.
It should then be rebranded as the Ladies Day Shergar Cup.

Diversity in essence in a race and a small step to change the face of racing to take in groupthink. A fine quest.

I’m waiting for Racing TV to launch a new weekly programme with Lydia Hislop and Captain Robbo marking our cards for the meeting.

I’ve not watched it for years
and don’t intend to start but I do love Royal Ascot and if this event is popular and pays its way I have little issue with it being on the calendar
The racing league however… pass the bucket

As Ghost excellently illustrates, the Shergar Cup on the right is clearly the better looking and with the greater glint of intelligence/lack of utter vacancy in the eyes.

Never realised the first edition only had two teams.

Only been once, but I didn’t see much evidence of what Wiki writes.

It was a decent crowd – but then it was a sunny August Saturday at a top racecourse just outside London – but it was an almost-exclusively adult crowd made up of the Peaky Blinders wannabe mob plus other halves, drinking, having the occasional bet, seemingly taking zero notice of the team updates on the big screen and tannoy and solely cheering the outcomes of races if they had backed a winner.
