Some might say his principal contribution to humanity is solving the long-standing case of “Who Ate All The Pies?” but love him, loathe him or simply laugh at him Gordon Elliott returns this week.
He’s done his crime, he’s served his time, Forgive N Forget wasn’t just a Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, he’s entitled to return so we all need to move on?
Racing is off it’s rocker giving him his licence back – should have been warned off for life?
Or don’t much care either way?
What’s the TRF verdict – the only verdict that matters! – on all this?

Humble pie.
September 5, 2021 at 13:25 #1559183Thanks patriot.
I don’t have a strong view either way.
I don’t believe in life bans for all but the worst – or repeat – offences.
But I wouldn’t be a fan of the bloke either.
Not massively keen on the Racing Post interviewing him ahead of his return.
He’s not someone racing can be proud of and best he keeps a low profile IMO.

There needed to be a punishment and he’s served his time, so I think it is time to move on.
I’m not sure how much impact the punishment had, but that isn’t his fault.
Agree he should be keeping a low profile, but I doubt that will happen. If anything else comes to light in future then his continued involvement in the sport would have to be called into question.

You’re still not quite there with the its/it’s thing that I pointed out to you, Chief, only to be told to **** Off! What a charmer you are
September 5, 2021 at 13:54 #1559190I was a fan of Elliotts a few years ago, partly because he started the practice of Irish trainers supporting some of the smaller tracks in the UK with his raiding parties to my local track Perth. Plus anyone who challenged Mullins domination of Irish racing was fine in my books.
However this incident plus the Panorama revelations have changed all that. Elliott should be attempting to keep his head down and working his way back into the publics affections. I haven’t seen the RP interview, only the Envoi Allen quote. Has anyone read it and could they confirm if he shows any contrition or regret?
September 5, 2021 at 14:02 #1559192Tbh, patriot, to me he’s just another name next to a horse on a race card.
A name to note if in form, a name to note if out of form.

I agree with you, Nathan, but bullying should never be allowed on any decent forum. By ignoring me and instructing his little band of followers to do likewise is clearly bullying. It’s not big and it’s not clever.
September 5, 2021 at 14:33 #1559201Six months was arguably on the lenient side. But he has served his punishment and is entitled to start with a clean slate. Just hope he shows a bit of humility.
September 5, 2021 at 14:39 #1559203I’d agree with that – he couldn’t really have complained at a year.
But lenient or not, he’s back this week and, though I doubt if we will see much in the way of humility, I suspect he will be quite subdued, older and maybe a little wiser.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"September 5, 2021 at 18:01 #1559238It was a disgustingly crass and a severe lack of judgement/respect for the dignity of an animal that had served him to the very best of its ability to the extent that it actually died on the job – he has served his sentence (whether you agree its length/severity) and will no doubt pick up where he left off with the winners (he has been very busy in the buying market in his down time).
However from a PR standpoint the woe is me thinking about the loss of a star horse comment would indicate that he really hasn’t quite yet grasped the concept of being tone deaf so hopefully someone will point this out to him so he can work on that – maybe do some PR or give financial backing with Retraining Racehorses or some similar organisation as a start.
History of checks done on his yard shows us that he treats his horses the right way in regards to feeding/vetinary care and general welfare and in that regard you cannot ban him from ever having any involvment with horses in any form again (i.e. like they should with Mahon) as his issue was a lack judgement rather than a horse welfare/cruelty issue. Though I do wonder had the pic not made it into the social media atmosphere would anyone be any the wiser to this incident ever happening?
With regards to the horrific end of retired horses that were previously in his care, to me the only thing a trainer/owner can do is ensure that (to the best of their ability) the horse is passed over or sold to a decent individual – maybe a little more due dilligence to see if there are any red flags etc before a deal is done is something that can be done.
It will be interesting to see if there are any differences in reactions to him when returning to Irish racing and when he crosses the seas to our shores. Personally, I don’t have a strong feeling either way on his return, would I still back his horses……in a word yes, I will give him the benefit of the doubt that this was a monumental mistake and that he has learned a valuable lesson to take forward but he needs to realise he is on very very thin ice with a lot of people.
September 5, 2021 at 18:05 #1559240I hope he’s learned when an animal dies in the future the correct response is gnashing of teeth and rending of garments. It’ll be pure show but it’s what people demand.
September 5, 2021 at 18:13 #1559242Not sure there ten-bob. I think just neglecting to park your arse on the stricken animal flashing a victory sign would be acceptable.
ID – in that case you have attended the wedding, I would strongly advise you to skip the many funerals to come.
