irish-racing is a bit better but it’s still in the ha’penny place compared to the RP.

Well, I too shall be transferring to the SportingLife. Hopefully an influx of new customers will encourage them to further improve their service.

I use the RP website mainly for the racecards and the form.
If the RP were ever to charge for access to them, they would surely lose a hefty percentage of their users, which would significantly curtail the advertisng revenue from their website?
The survey obviously means they want to have their cake and eat it.
    I would tell them no!

On a side issue, RP owners have obviously purchased racingpost.com domain name.

As someone who occasionally used to type this in, rather than .co.uk, I believe that it was a Hong Kong, or somewhere else in SE Asia site.

I don’t suppose that the previous domain owners would have let it go very cheaply.

Its the way the RP have gradually reduced access over the past few months without saying a word that I’m unhappy with as well

cuttings library – nothing after 3 months ago
news stories – frequently say read more in today’s Racing Post
reports section – no longer being updated it seems

As for the form section on the Sporting Life site it isn’t as good but you should be able to ascertain whether it was NH/Flat if you know your jockeys.

Which other sport charges to access its primary website? In the current climate racing should be trying its damnest to attract new followers and this isn’t the way to do it along with the YouTube situation…

I’m no apologist for the Racing Post but giving away free information on its website that readers of the paper have to pay for seems an unworkable business model. A subscription of £7.95 a month strikes me as very cheap compared to the cost of buying the paper every day.

tuffers – thats exactly the same as any other national newspaper. RP will quickly die if they try to charge….the internet is all about advertising for revenue….payment sites never work.

How can anyone who is serious about racing use the Sporting Life website? It is littered with errors.

Just another scheme designed to fleece punters. You might be able to offset it against any premium tax, depending if you are on holiday or not, who knows.

Racing Post isn’t all that good anyway, you can get better ratings and stats for free elsewhere.

If the RP add a bit of functionality they can kill off Raceform Interactive which costs £70 per month for completely outdated DBMS. £7.95 per month could be the biggest bargain in racing.

What about Timeform – should they give away their cards for free on the internet?

You pay your money and take your chances or in this case don’t pay.

Anbody that thinks the Sporting Life is a viable alternative, be my guest. I hope that attitude is a prevailing one because I will definitely have a paying edge however slight. It’s all about value or the perception thereof isn’t it.

Reminds me of the heyday of daytraders when everybody thought it was so easy making money using free sites like Yahoo finance or similar sites to do their analysis while I was paying in the neighborhood of 4000 dollars a year for really good proprietary information. Saved bundles when the whole internet bubble, deck of cards came crashing down. Seems like it wiped out most of the wannabe traders though. Personally I hope I’m the only guy that pays up and while we are at it I think they should charge 20 quid a month to ensure that even less people subscribe.

tuffers- anyone who will base their betting plans on RP or even Timeform ratings will probably be happy to pay. Good luck to them.

IMO it’s the way people process the information available on the RP (and elsewhere) that determine whether or not they will be winners or losers. Without the basic info being available for free on the RP, the clueless layers on Betfair may just decide to move on to other sports, leaving only those who can process the info as well as you.

From my personal perspective, I am a small-time punter with a young family and hefty mortgage who has a finite amount of income with which to bet. I don’t subscribe to Raceform Interactive or any other stats/ratings services. I generally break even or make a small loss on a monthly basis. If I have to pay €120 a year to access information which I have previously had for free, then I’ll probably just start betting more on soccer and NFL as opposed to betting on horses with less information than I previously had.

Much of the data and information on the Sporting Life site is provided by the Press Association. I cannot believe for a moment that the latter would provide anything other than a top-quality product.

Some good points there David. Maybe my darwinian nature got the better of me but there do seem to be a good many people on here that subscribe to the free lunch theory. Moaning and wailing about the price of an RUK subscription (surely some of the best value out there) etc etc. Anyway I can be swayed by a cogent argument so just for you let’s keep it at the original 7,95. :) Should you decide to take your money elsewhere regardless, then maybe we can meet up on the NFL betting markets. Personally I rarely have a bet on soccer, a sport I find with few exceptions infinitely boring.

    Exactly, prufrock.

I remember a former boss of mine making me sift through a PA database, trying to find the errors. I would still be doing it now had he not told me there was enough evidence after 10 races!
