Anyone get the RP today and have a quick look through all of the 2009 Specials on offer from our favourite bookies?
Anyone thinking of taking/have taken any of them?
I quite like the look of these 4….
Luca Cumani to train the winner of the Melbourne Cup 09 – 12/1
AP to ride the winner of the National – 12/1
Hayley Turner to ride a UK Group One winner – 8/1
Sheikh Mohammed to own the winner of the Kentucky Derby – 12/1January 1, 2009 at 00:00 #200698That could be a huge price for the Sheik Mo bet.
January 1, 2009 at 00:03 #200699Agreed – The others, with the exception of Turner perhaps, are not good prices.
Midshipman looks a very good prospect.
January 1, 2009 at 00:17 #200705Found Turner elsewhere for 12-1 so that seems a decent bet

I agree, the Sheikh Mohammed one seems a very good bet. He’s buying horses specifically for this now and should have a massive chance if all goes according to plan in training
January 1, 2009 at 12:49 #200767Watch the small print on the bet.
The listed owner of both Midshipman and Coronet of a Baron seems to be Darley rather than Sh Mo personally. Not sure about Vineyard Haven or Jose Adan. Donativum is Princess Haya.
Had he left Midshipman to Baffert’s prep, likely the price would be shorter.
The bet rows along with Sh Mo’s sporting spirit, that its not so much about getting there, and more about the way you do it. Specifically, it has to be with a horse wintered and prepped in Dubai.
He’s switched from Euro turf breds to US dirt-breds, so that’s removed one variable. Even so, I’ll be backing his experiment with my interest rather than my money.
best regards
wit
January 1, 2009 at 15:32 #200786No idea if the UAE Derby is a Graded Stakes as yet but if not then Donativium is screwed since he’s got zero graded stakes earnings.
For it to be classed as a Sheikh Mo owned runner it will have to run in the maroon and white. As Wit says Godolphin, Princess Haya, Sheikh Rashid etc. don’t count.
January 1, 2009 at 20:35 #200850As Sheikh Mo only has runners under the Darley Stable banner in the US, and the other horses (Midshipman, Vineyard Haven, Donativum, Coronet of a Baron, etc) mentioned now transferred to and running under the Godolphin banner, I would check the smallprint as advised!

Sheikh Mohammed had several horses running in Germany last year, some trained in the UK and some in France, but all of them ran under the Darley name, so maybe it’s an international thing.
Darren – AngloGerman

He’s also bought out Fabre to effectively train privately for him IIRC from earlier in the year. Well for Sheikh Mo and a few select friends I think it was.

Skeikh Mohammed had horses with Fabre/Pantall in France last season that raced in his own name and not Darley. I don’t believe he had one horse race in his name/colours in the UK at all throughout 2008 either.
Also, Irish Stamp, I think Fabre is taking charge of about 70 juveniles next season for Shekh Mo/Darley and has stated that his other major owners shouldn’t be affected.
January 2, 2009 at 01:14 #200915I like the sound of the Hayley Turner one – especially at 12’s
January 2, 2009 at 01:30 #200920I really don’t think the 12’s is anything to write home about. The vast majority of the big yards that contest these races have retained jockeys so it’s hard to see her getting on anything that is strongly fancied. These trainers in 2008 gave her more than 30 rides, Bell, Hollinshead, Butler, Callaghan, Kelleway, Usher and Best. None are the most prolific in Group 1’s are they and you couldn’t say she’d be first choice with any of them.
Given the way the calendar works, I’d imagine Turner’s agent will be thinking far more of getting her a full book of good rides at the second or third biggest meeting of the day rather than trying to put her up on rags with little chance in Group 1’s. I think you’d be better off backing her in any individual Group 1 race she rides in rather than take 12’s for them all.

Hi David Johnson
Couldn’t agree more 12/1 is an awful price and just a con on the back of her recent publicityJanuary 6, 2009 at 18:55 #201951Agreed.
12/1 just looks a tempter for mug punters to latch onto without having done the research.
