The UK’s appetite for grief tourism seems to know no bounds.

Yellow ribbons worn by England’s players at Lords, appeals at the Cup Final, scores of ‘unofficial’ websites (“Help Usâ€ÂÂ

Yep. Someone is collecting millions of pounds in donations as well, what is the money going to be used for? I’ve heard stories that people in the UK are putting up posters (cut out of The Sun,) in their windows, what is this going to achieve? Is anyone seriously considering that she is in the UK?
Some people seem to have a pornographic interest in human misery and at every turn their behaviour is encouraged and validated by the tabloid papers and other outlets like Sky News in their blanket coverage.

Sad to say, "bad news" is good news for the media.

How many different BBC reporters have you counted in Portugal so far?:o

I don’t wish to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but the massively OTT bandwagon that the media have created suggests to me that the whole Madeline McCann thing may be ‘burying’ another story.

Or maybe it’s just a slow news year.

Agreed, it’s an unsettling and unedifying business.

Rightly or wrongly I tend to retire into my shell when confronted by ‘dead Diana’ type mass hysteria and lemming-like bandwagon jumping so correct me if I’m wrong…

…but didn’t the parents make a conscious decision to leave the child alone in her hotel room so they could go off and enjoy a night on the tiles.

And if that is the case they are plainly guilty of wanton neglect and whilst not ‘deserving’ to have the girl abducted are wholly responsible for it.

The parents went to a restaurant in the same complex and regularly went back to the rooms to check that their children were ok……well, that’s the story that they have given out. It was a risk that they took and an irresponsible one imo which they are no doubt regretting 100%. Their children were too young to be left alone like that.
The reaction of the media has been way OTT but I suppose it makes people take notice and even I have been regularly watching the news etc which I rarely do usually.

1000’s of children are abducted every year and are never heard from again .. it’s a global scandal that none of the big movers and shakers (the UN, US, big business etc) seem to care a toss about. If anything comes out of this it will force something to be done about it and the money collected should be used to highlight it.

I hope it never goes out of the news and they go and and on about it, until they find out what has happened to her.

GH, your right about the press turning on the parents , but no matter how irresponsible they were, it doesn’t give anyone the right to go and steal their kids.

I see the jockeys in the Derby will all be wearing yellow ribbons in the race.

sorry if i’ve missed it but can someone explain exactly what these ribbons are for and what is it hoped they will actually achieve?

I was interested to note that her parents got to see the Pope this week….how many other parents who lose their child are granted this and why are they being treated as such a special case?

Who can blame the McCanns for wanting to keep this issue in the public eye ? I have some sympathy with parents not standing guard at all times over their young, providing they make regular checks on them, which this couple did.
What’s the difference in leaving babies in a bedroom whilst the parents are in another room in the same house and leaving them whilst paremts are 80yds down the road? No difference, unless and until a child dies/goes missing.
A point that has been made elsewhere though is, would the press have been so sympathetic if the parents had been a couple of scouse scallies who wore shell suits, smoked and were on the dole? I doubt it.
Dave Jay. Curious as to why you think it is big business’ responsibility to raise the profile of abducted children?

There is a good point here. I have no doubt that had these been working class parents, the question of their parenting skills would have been raised much earlier and much more forcefully.

There is a sensible middle ground between standing guard over your child all the time and leaving them alone in a house, room or apartment. Being 80 yards away is entirely different to leaving them sleeping in another room of the same house. I can’t imagine a situation in which we would ever leave our 3yo alone in the house, car, apartment or wherever we were staying.

But very few of us could say we have never made mistakes or misjudgments. As someone else has said, the culprit(s) here are the people who took her, not her parents.

Do they really think anyone is going to see the yellow ribbons and go "Christ, whats all this about?". Unless you have spent the past month on Jupiter, you’ve already got more than your fair share of the Madeleine McCann story put right up in your face.
