My latest argument with GT got me thinking.
We’ve all got our own idea about the political spectrum and where we sit on it.
So I thought it would be fun to create categories, put a few politicians into them, then add some forumites.
The categories are: Right, Centre Right, Centre, Centre Left, Left.
I suppose there’s Far Right and Far Left but for me this is kinda Britain First and Communist etc Party territory and outside the Tory and Labour Partys.
I’m aware that there’s authoritarian and libertarian ways of viewing it too, but cba with all that.
For me, the Lib Dems are centre, moderate One Nation Tories are centre right, the rest are Right, and for Labour the moderates like Starmer are centre left and the rest are Left.
Right
Jacob Rees-Mogg
Rishi SunakCentre Right
David Cameron
Ken Clarke

Jeremy Corbyn
Dianne AbbotThere’s a few to be getting on the with.
Where do YOU sit on this spectrum?

Value Is EverythingJuly 8, 2022 at 05:24 #1605876Looking at GT’s list, I would admit to being Centre-left on most topics but veer further left when the Tories start taking the piss.
July 8, 2022 at 07:04 #1605877Ginge: you include Farage but not Caroline Lucas. Where would you place her on your chart?
July 8, 2022 at 08:18 #1605882Pretty accurate list although there is socially liberal and economic. I’m very socially liberal. I’m right economically but steer well away from the gold standard rand paul nutters of t(e extreme libertarians who are certifiable and probably autistic
Also the extreme right is very close and interchangeable wit the extreme left. Worth remembering that corbyn had strong support from duke griffin Irving and so on. The extreme lefts fawning over hard right extremely authoritarian Muslim regimes as well as Putin is another indicator
July 8, 2022 at 10:23 #1605899Just for you Glad’, have added Lucas and Barclay.

July 8, 2022 at 10:53 #1605907Cheers, Ginge. So in your eyes Lucas is on a par with Mao, Stalin, Lenin, Putin, etc…
Your ratings are as about as reliable as Timeform’s these days.
July 8, 2022 at 11:01 #1605912GT’s added extreme left category and contents therein is very telling.
Though it doesn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know.
I could create an extreme right one and put Thatcher in there with Mussolini – but that wouldn’t be grown-up politics either.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 8, 2022 at 11:22 #1605914GT, the first thing about Putin is him being a capitalist. The 2nd thing is him describing Jews as Nazis. I think he is a huge Nazi himself and pretty much far right.
Otherwise it’s a good list.
July 8, 2022 at 11:54 #1605919Many don’t realise how far left the Greens in Britain are. They’re miles further left than the more sensible Green movement of most other European nations.
No, Lucas is not “on a par with Mao, Stalin…” it’s a different kind of extreme left and has done some good things, some (eg on animal cruelty) that even I can agree with. However, that doesn’t alter where she stands in the list.
Lucas has been vice president of the far left group Stop The War Coalition and is a fan of that organisation’s most well known face, Jeremy Corbyn; whose leadership campaign she wholeheartedly endorsed.
Value Is EverythingJuly 8, 2022 at 11:59 #1605921Putin is no capitalist, not like a western capitalist anyway.
As others have said Ruby, the far left’s place is on many issues very close to the far right.
Just look at how Jeremy Corbyn has got into trouble with his description of the jews.
Value Is EverythingJuly 8, 2022 at 12:11 #1605923Of course some Extreme Right and Extreme Left are worse than others.
Marx was the father of Communism and therefore has to be in the extreme left category, yet does not have blood on his hands like Stalin.
ex-Shadow chancellor McDonnell has described himself as a Marxist.
etc etc
Value Is EverythingJuly 8, 2022 at 12:16 #1605925It’s a circle, not a spectrum. As has been said, go far enough one way or the other and you’ll meet them on the other side.
