On the face of it, Ruler of All has little going for him (bar his name, perhaps) in tomorrow’s Elite Hurdle. From a tiny yard ridden, by a very inexperienced claimer and carrying a set of uninspiring form figures.

But he has the highest speed rating in the race (RP ratings) and he’s been running a fair bit better than the 022356 string suggests. He travelled well last time at Aintree coming from last to try and deliver his challenge approaching the final flight. But he took a bump on landing then another as he tried to recover, but he ran on well enough to suggest he’s improving and has a race in him. It might not be this one, but given the way he travels and Coral’s 33/1, I think he’ll be a solid back to lay.

He can hang badly left sometimes, so you’d think Wincanton would not be the place to go. But both his victories have been right handed, when Eddie O’Grady trained him.

However he runs, it should be a good race which will tell us much about the chances of Melodic Rendezvous and Far West going on this season.

Made a note to myself to go to Wincanton next year for this meeting; great days racing.

    Ruler Of All

is not such a strange bet Joe. I’ve had a saver on him. As you say, came from the back at Aintree and it was a slowly run race. With

    Ahyaknowyaself

in the field, Cotton Mill and Far West also usually ridden prominently – this should be a well run race. One that should suit him a lot better than last time. Got a bit to find, but not an impossible amount. If they go off too quick and cut each others throats ROA could pick up the pieces.

    For

    Karinga Dancer

it would clearly be best (for peace of mind’s sake) if the going were to be no worse than good-soft. However, he should really be thought of as "not running on soft yet". Breathing oporation came after those runs on soft and is unbeaten since going under the knife. Price means it’s (imo) worth taking a chance on the ground. Effectively getting weight from all three main rivals (allowing for Far West being a 4yo). Impresssive on reappearance and more to come, stable in good form and has track experience.

    Cotton Mill

‘s trainer in good nick too. It was pretty soft when ran in the Betfair Hurdle last season. Second in one of the biggest handicap hurdles of the season. That looks his best form. Truly run races seem ideal. The Newbury run coming on reappearance (as is this) and didn’t run that well afterwards. May be best caught fresh and stable going well.

    Far West

is very much respected, distant 2nd to Our Connor in Triumph. Ran well first time up last term so should be fit. Nicholls is having winners, but yet to hit real top form. Having said that, a market move this morning is encouraging. Just wonder whether Far West has as much improvement as some others. A bit too short in the betting for me.

    Melodic Rendezvous

stable are doing no more than ok so far this season. Looked a possible Supreme/Neptune contender. Missed Cheltenham with a bad scope and not seen again last term. Was it just a virus? Original "favourite" for this, has questions to answer, so I have him down as fourth best chance myself.

I’ve backed Karinga Dancer with savers on Cotton Mill and Ruler Of All. :)

Well, I got that badly wrong. Left a lay in at 10s for him thinking he’d travel well enough with that weight to look dangerous 2 out.

Certainly didn’t enjoy going right handed. I thought he was going to end up in with the bookies. He’ll pick something up back left handed, I hope and repay today’s losses.

On the positive side, I had a fiver EW dbl last night Mel Rend for the CH at 33 and Harry Topper for the GC at 33 . . . hope springs eternal!

Always liked Melodic Rendezvous and couldn’t believe he drifted out to 9/2. I backed that one to death… and glad i did! :D

I really fancied this one for Cheltenham and he gave me plenty of returns in his prep races, so it was a shame he had to miss the Festival.
