I see on the BBC interactive service (is it still called ceefax?) that there is a possibility that the Derby may move from its scheduled Saturday slot in 2012 to form part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
It’s not clear from the report which day it would move to, or quite why it would need to move at all to be part of the celebration, but there will be a bank Holiday on thMonday 4th June followed by an ‘extra’ holiday on the 5th (to allow ‘the workers’ to celebrate) so my reading would be that it might fit to have it on the 5th. That way, the workers could celebrate by going to Epsom while the Queen could celebrate by, er, going to Epsom too.
Not sure if a Tuesday Derby really appeals but if it did form the centrepiece of a ntional day of celebration perhaps it would be an ideal vehicle for marketing racing.
Knowing our luck some O’Brien trained son of Galileo would go off 4 to 1 on and he’d have another six of the eight runner field in as pacemakers with a Richard Hannon trained Royal sprinter making up field to ensure she has a runner.
January 9, 2010 at 18:51 #269014Notwithstanding the fact it is probably tempting fate arranging a bank holiday two years in advance of the event I don’t see any need to move The Derby.
If it is going to be a holiday weekend what will be achieved from moving the race from Saturday to either the Monday or Tuesday?
I suppose the only possible "justification" for moving Derby Day would be if the major national Jubilee celebration event was scheduled for the Saturday, then a clash could be avoided.
Although I would have thought such an event would be scheduled for the Monday.
January 9, 2010 at 18:51 #269015Might do well for the ‘Racing for Change’ programme. Could pull in extra viewers which is always a bonus for the sport. Would get even more coverage if the Queen had a runner herself…..

TAPK has already got his eye on the winner. The yearling itself hasn’t had a name officially registered with Wetherbys yet – but there is no stopping our man
.I think it’s a great idea….
January 9, 2010 at 19:08 #269019Why not put it back to Wednesday? It would be a perfect event to cap off the whole celebration. I never got why you’d put the Epsom Derby on an already crowded sporting weekend.
January 9, 2010 at 19:10 #269020I think they’re talking about moving it specifically so the Queen can attend.

Arch Royalist that I am I would not be impressed if the race was moved just so HM could attend.
If that is going to be the new trend – could I ask that Ascot move their meeting on 23rd of January to the 24th as I have a prior engagement on the 23rd?
January 9, 2010 at 20:03 #269028A no brainer to run it on the Tuesday as long as the Queen can attend. A great opportunity for racing.

You and me both, Miss Woodford. Moving the Blue Riband from a Wednesday to a Saturday was a jaw dropping mistake.
This could be the way back. Pinza once wrote that the Derby was run on all sorts of days pre-war so a Tuesday is fine by me. Just not a Saturday where it gets lost among all the dross and irrelevances.

That depends, you’re not Lord Ostermeyer are you?
To be honest, I wouldn’t be fussed either way. The Tuesday is going to be a Bank Holiday in any case.
In keeping with the tone of most of my posts lately, I think they should have it in February… at Wolverhampton.
January 10, 2010 at 17:18 #269147Without being the prophet of doom…the 2012 derby is 2.5 years away…will Her Maj even still be with us?
To be honest how many people will tune into or get involved in the Queens Diamond Jubilee CElebrations? I dont believe the Derby should be moved just for the benefit of one person.

Quite a few – over a million turned up in London for the Golden Jubilee celebrations.
January 10, 2010 at 17:34 #269153And how many of these would have been tourists, nationals from other commonwealth countries?
Not sure any of them would have been those who are planning a trip to Epsom Downs instead.

Given that her mother lived to be 101, I think you will have Liz for quite some time yet.

I know of at least one
January 10, 2010 at 17:50 #269158Oh well in that case the derby day needs to be changed! Didn’t realise you were going

You’re correct Miss Woodford, there is lots of stamina on the dam side!

Too kind douginho but I think I would survive missing The Derby – now if it were Cartmel or Fontwell it would be a different story

It would not surprise me if Epsom did move the Derby to suit the Jubilee celebrations …. I suppose in their defence The Queen is a strong supporter of racing and it is very rarely she does miss Derby Day.
One royal racing "change" which really pissed me off was back in 1997 when racing was cancelled the day of Princess Di’s funeral. It may possibly have been remotely justified had she been a racing fan and a regular attendee at the races, but she wasn’t and to this day I cannot see the justification.
