I think the issue has been in recent years, hurricance runs KG for example, that many of the older horses competing were out of form or semmingly on the downgrade. That is not true of this years. Looks a good race to me. Very much looking forward to it.

What about the term "oligopoly" being used in racing context?
July 25, 2008 at 11:17 #174718I don’t buy this talk of 3yos needing a break at this time of the season or that 10f is more fashionable as a bunch of them ran less than 2 weeks ago in the Grand Prix de Paris. Perhaps they thought they weren’t good enough to take on their elders and this race has imo much more prestige for a 3yo who will be retired and go to stud than the GPDP. Imo this year’s crop of 3yos apart from NA & HTN don’t look anything above average and the former would have run in this race but for being injured. I think it is a dearth of high quality middle distance 3yos that is more to blame as after all they also avoided the Eclipse this year.
As for the French they have never really bothered with this race very much.

I think monopoly is probably more appropriate bearing in mind AOB current track record.
July 25, 2008 at 11:31 #174723What term do we use for Godolphin then – Flopoly?
July 25, 2008 at 11:50 #174733Flopopoly, surely!

July 25, 2008 at 12:03 #174742Aragorn, oligopolistic has been referred to dictionary corner, debated and allowed by Des.

Adding "istic" in this context means "containing characteristics of".
However, I can see your point. Would you have accepted the Aga being described as an Oligarch? (Which is probably a better use of language when described someone like the Aga, or John Magnier).
Is racehorse ownership in Europe an oligopoly (a market dominated by a limited number of providers?). I think so, though others disagree.
And for a race to hold muster in 2008, you need all the major players to focus on it otherwise it swiftly goes out of fashion, (the Leger anyone?).
As I said, the major trainers in this country who would support the race, (and who train for big market players like Khalid Abdullah and Sheikh Hamdan) are currently operating at a lower league, like Man Utd in the seventies. They’ll be back.
Do members feel that the Sovereign Series will help?
July 25, 2008 at 12:09 #174748Oligopolistically speaking, no.
