I don’t think he will bounce back although if he does, tomorrow will be just a pipe-opener. But whether he does or not, the current 4/1 best price is a joke. Even if he hadn’t struggled at the back-end of last season, he wouldn’t be much shorter than 5/2 or 3/1 and you’re taking a big chance at 4/1 that he is back to full fitness and still retains his temperament and interest in the game.

i agree that 4-1 is no price for a horse that was out of form at the end of last season, but if he had finished last season in the form he started it im sure he would be evens for tommorrows race. wouldnt suprise me if he is backed heavily in the morning either. i suppose it depends if people believe the whole wind/back ulcers arguement or whether he has issues with his willingness to win. i really cant make up my mind so think i will sit this one out unless he drifts to a stupidly huge price!!!!!

IMO, with the blinkers back on, and over this stiffer track, I would expect him to run at least a couple of stone better than he did at Aintree.
Whether, at this stage of the season, he will be able to trouble the likes of Hardy Eustace and Afsoun is a moot point and not something I’d bet on, but I would expect him to put up a much better show than he did in either of his previous 2 races.
Of course, then it will be the back problem, the breathing operation, the stomach ulcers, and the over-racing that would have been the problem, and nothing to do with his not being good enough.

Why, oh why, do we have to have so many good races all on one day?
Maybe some day soon we willl be reduced to banded racing 6 days a week, with the only chance of a watching a decent race depending on how well the courses maintain their schedules on a Saturday?

The fact Asfoun is favourite and his Champion Hurdle 3rd is not worth a hoot send out warning signs to me. Considering the doubts about the other 2 you would think he should win.

However I couldn’t see him beating Detroit City or Hardy Eustace if they were spot on.

Something of a scary race and although at the weights AP’s mount seems to have no chance, I think he won’t be far away with doubts surrounding the others.

John Quinn who trains up at Settrington has Kings Quay spot on for this and could also run above his best form and cause a shock.

It wouldn’t suprise me if 2 of the first four in the betting run badly and he sneaks into a place.

This race is the hardest of all the races on Saturday to work out IMO.

We have the classy old campaigner Hardy Eustace, who won this last season and if he’s in the same form this time is sure to go close. Afsoun is a young hurdler of potential, who could have went novice chasing, but they have elected to stick to hurdles for now. Will he improve for the step up in trip? He ran over it at Aintree, but he may have been over the top? Detroit City, looked unstoppable at the start of last season, but then the wheels came off! Seems like he’s been given a full service with all the treatment he’s had for the various problems that have troubled him. For a horse that won over 2m2f on the flat, this distance should suit him and even 3m over hurdles should be within his range. Wichita Lineman is very progressive and could have gone unbeaten last season, as there were excuses when he got beat. It will be interesting to see how much pace he has against the other 3 when they kick for home, as he looked a 3 mile specialist last season.

It’s a hard one to sum up, but in theory if they all ran to form, you would expect only a couple of lengths to cover Hardy Eustace, Afsoun and Detroit City at the finish with Witchita Lineman finishing a few lengths back if he lacks the necessary finishing kick at the business end. Whatever it’s going to be an informative race to sit back, watch and enjoy :)

As I see it, this is a race to savour rather than get involved in. Though, for what it’s worth, I think Wichita Lineman won’t be too far away at the finish.

Im keen on hardy here. Perfect distance and he goes well at this time of the season. Hes had a pipe opener too. Afsoun is said to need the race and sadly have to pass on DC for now

I think the 3-1 Hardy is a decent bet

Fair play to Hardy. Hopefully connections will stay true to their word and go the stayers route with him.

I’d like top extend my sympathies to Terry Warner in particular on the passing of Detroit City. He was kind enough to speak to me at Cheltenham last weekend when I was asking him whether he had purchased the The Grey Berry and he stopped and chatted as if he had all the time in the world and nowhere better to be.

Very sad day. Part and parcel of the sport but still always distressing.

    Sympathies to connections.

OK, I read it on the RP site.
All in all, a quite messed up week for racing
Two of the best greys in the business both gone. I’m glad I gave up gambling, as I can now watch the game without mixed emotions. It’s so sad, at the second flight too? Damn.

    Horrible stuff.

Such a shame for him to go out this way.

    RIP Detriot City.
