    I think on the Flat the weight-for-age and gender allowances are about right.

    But over Jumps I see various things I think are simply wrong.

    The Arc has proven the WFA and Sex allowance is wrong. The jumps is even worse.

    Outstanding mares like Honeysuckle would run. The likes of Put The Kettle On would take up a Mares option.

    I did say “almost”.

    How many fillies / mares have as much in hand over their male rivals as Honeysuckle?
    Almost none.

    So yes perhaps Honeysuckle.

    …And any filly / mare would first have to show just how good she was against the fillies first. Having the ability and showing it are two different things. OK for Honeysuckle because she likes to race prominently. But a mare that needs to come from off the pace rarely shows just how much she has in hand over vastly inferior rivals.

    Yes, bring the allowance down to a fair 3 or 4 lbs.
    No, don’t get rid of it entirely.

    No allowance at all would lead to FAR fewer females trying and as a consequence even less competitive fields in Grade 1’s. Less competitive “Open” races as well as those restricted to females.

    That 7lb allowance is a GIFT if the mare is any good.

    Please leave the allowance at 7lb – it’s a goldmine for punters!
