As I said previously, I believe Nina is the best female jockey we’ve ever seen over jumps. However, I’d probably put at least 15 male jockeys in front of her. I do rate "Head" Turner in my top 10 flat jockeys.
Danielle Hodson was the leading steeplecchase jockey in the US by earnings last season, and ranked 4th by races won. She’s been riding for a little while now, and has gotten better and better every year. I’d put her among the top jump jockeys in the world right now of either gender.
March 4, 2010 at 20:45 #280470It is just plain silly to suggest that Nina Carberry is anywhere close to being in Tony McCoy’s class.

Segal’s entitleed to his opinion but like most of his tips his opinions are contraversial…..every so often one of his long range tips win but as the say throw shyte at a wall and soem will stick
Stating something like McCoy isn’t it the top 5 jockeys gets him attention and whether he believes what he’s saying doesn’t matter a hoot.
It’s called journalism

What I said was her style and therefore herself would be more suitable for Denman than AP, horse run for her, she’d present him right at his fences, horses jump really well for her, she’d let Denman do his own thing, that’s how Sam rode him.

Absolute poppycock!!!!
Nina who?
You take away Garde Champetre wins and Nina Carberry would have a woeful record over fences.
To even hint she is in the same county as one of the greatest jockeys of all time is bordering on insanity.
Sam Thomas did well on Denman in 2008 and as much as I was against him losing the ride to say he let Denman do his own thing is absolute rubbish.
Almost any pro jockey could have ridden Denman until 4 out in the 2008 Gold Cup. The horse was jumping from fence to fence but over the last 3 fences Sam lost his cool was all over the shop and slipped into complete Cheltenham panic mode. He was 10 lengths or more clear and rode him over the last 2 fences like he was on a dash to the line at Lingfield a/w and could easily had him on the floor……..he didn’t, so good on him but there was nothing brilliant about the ride.
At Newbury Tony asked Denman up at his fences to get him into a rhythm and if you watch Ruby in the Hennessy he does exactly the same thing fence to fence.
The big horse ran straight into a fence probably because he was tired and lost concentration. As PN said to suggest Tony was to blame is just plain stupid.
The man must have ridden over 1000 winners over fences and averaged over 20% chase wins on some of the worst jumpers you could ever hope to see and you think Denman would jump better for Nina friggin Carberry… Rock n mate you’d be laughed off the racecourse coming away with that one.

May I quote Enda Bolger who knows a thing or two about racing………….
Enda Bolger said: "
I’ve been saying it all along, but I think she (Nina Carberry) is probably the best rider I’ve ever seen, she’s tremendous."
I rest my case

……………but surely not as much as Fist?!

March 6, 2010 at 12:57 #280816Methinks the redoubtable Enda was getting somewhat carried away on an air of Cheltenham winning exuberance when he made the Nina comment.

I’ve found similar quotes via google from Enda after other races.
March 6, 2010 at 14:44 #280837That’s why McCoy is who he is…
What a ride on Eric’s Charm.

I didn’t realise Enda Bolger’s opinion was the be all and end all, CS.
I must check up on that.

Edna Bolger is very lucky People like Jonjo and Tony Martin recommended JP McManus send him Cadre Champetre who would be more suited to running in cross country events than NH chases which is the guys forte. The horse is responsible for almost half of the 20 winners the guy has trained in 5 years under rules..He’s probably never heard of Tony McCoy
I’m not knocking Nina one little bit when I say there’s hardly aman alive that knows racing who would suggest replacing Tony with Nina Carberry…….it’s simply laughable…….Anyway I think she’d die of shock and ask them if they were stone mad if they said she was replacing him.
March 6, 2010 at 22:16 #280903Fist you do not seem to know much about Enda Bolger
March 7, 2010 at 10:29 #280951I didn’t realise Enda Bolger’s opinion was the be all and end all, CS.
I’ve never said it was, I merely used Enda’s opinion as an example of someone who’s probably forgotten more about NH racing that the whole lot of us on here will ever know.
If I was defending my opinion in court …which was that Nina would suit Denman better than McCoy, not that she is the best jockey riding today…after I’m being called an idiot for expressing that opionion by the "prosecution", I’d need a "expert" to call as a worthy witness for the defence. I’d say Enda Bolger’s credentials would make his opinions acceptable to "The Twelve Angry Men" and the judge could put his black handkerchief back in his hip pocket.
Fist seems to want to see him don that same black rag when handing out the sentance for my crimes against AP’s reputation. As a footnote…If I’d compared Paul Carberry to AP there would have been little furore, yet I’m not the only one on this forum who has expressed the opinion that he’s not even the best jockey in his own family. Even Dermont Weld said in the immediate aftermath of the Harchibald debacle, "His sister would not have got beat on him" adding "I’d take the horse home and geld the jockey"
Case dismissed????
