Its going to be some year if those last year uphold their potential. I think the Champ Hurdle Division looks to have plenty of talent there, and it will be interesting to see how last years novices get on there as a few of them looked very good.
There has been plenty of money lately for crackaway jack and on last years progression he isnt one I would write off too quickly it will be interesting to see if that support is warranted.
I think Celestial Halo is very much overlooked as the idea of the world hurdle hasnt really been put ou there yet for him, but his performance in the triumph was IMO very much a staying performance, on the flat he was a stayer, and IMO he’s bred like a stayer. To go from the front and just run them ragged like that was something else. The fact that he looks like he wants to go much further and that the 3 mile hurdling division dont tend to do start stop-gallops too often, I think Nicholls could make him virtually unstoppable.
I take it Carruthers is due to take on the Royal and Sun Alliance this year, has anyone heard any news on him?
I hope to see money trix get back from injury this season, just to see what he is capable of as he looked fairly decent when running at newcastle.

September 17, 2008 at 14:24 #181373Well needles to say I jumped on Binocular at huge odds for the CH and I am very hopeful he proves to be as good as I first thought the first time he ran.
Howver I am very keen on Crackaway Jack who has loads of improvement in him and has been nibbled at for the CH already.
With Katchit Sizing Europe Osana and others it is far from a foregone conclusion.
A sporting bet just now could be Tidal Bay Kauto Star and Binocular which would give a massive payout should it come about they all won. I’ve had a few quid on plus I backed MM at 6/4 way back….Think I had a rush of blood to the head that day.
Being a huge Kato fan I hope he comes back and proves to be one of the all time grat but if Denman remains unbeaten for the next couple of seasons that would be a sight to behold. Nothing better than watching a champion in action.
I’m looking forward to seeing Rippling Ring go fencing as don’t think he’s got what it takes to be a top class hurdler but by all accounts that is unlikely to happen.
Kate Waltens young chaser (name escapes me and I backed it all seaon) is a horse I think has a big future.
Can’t wait to see what Nicky Henderson comes up with. Year after year he finds these brilliant young hurdlers and the coming season will be no different.
Can’t wait to read all the posters who say katchit has lost it when Alan King run him below par again this season then turnss him out spot on for the CH
All in all it should be lost of fun and hopefully as good a season as last.

See, not too hard, is it ?

September 17, 2008 at 21:02 #181420I ain’t buying the Kasbah Bliss ‘improvement’ theory, and nail my colours to the mast here and now – the form of the last Stayers Hurdle was rank, and the French horse is a shocking price under a projected 11-12 penalty (aka C. Pieux).
A new broom will sweep through the staying division next season, in the shape of Elusive Dream. Theories that the Nicholls horse won’t like the Cheltenham hill were dispelled as early as last April, and he will spend the entire season jumping the opposition in staying hurdles into the deck.
Harumph.
PS. Hats off to Fist with his "needles to say" contribution. It reminds me of that Steptoe and Son episode, where Harold is trying to nail the bird from his acting class – pure televisual magic.
He’ll be telling us that Binocular is a high-class ‘polopony’ next.
September 17, 2008 at 21:09 #181422I do think that Elusive Dream could be the top staying hurdler this season but i think that Flat tracks will suit him so maybe the Newbury race and the Rendlesham at Haydock will be his ideal races before the Liverpool Hurdle at Aintree.

Rumour has it Prince Charles tried to buy him but you how people are terrible gossips
September 18, 2008 at 02:29 #181445Looking forward to seeing Razor Royale go novice chasing. Always travels really well over hurdles but doesnt find anything so maybe chasing can be the making of him.
Master Minded, Tidal Bay, Kauto Star, Denman, Crack Away Jack are some others.
September 18, 2008 at 08:15 #181452Voy Por will be campaigned over 2 mile 4 this season from what i can gather.
I am looking forward to seeing Binocular run this season, think this horse could be something special.
September 18, 2008 at 08:32 #181453I ain’t backing something that probably needs to improve a stone on it’s novice form, not even at 14’s, and not when there’s a frenchie winning group 3’s in hack canters over in frog land.
If he’s winning Group 3’s on the Flat that easily, they might decide to keep him on the Level. Where would that leave your 4/1 a/p bet for the Stayers??.
Happy to acknowledge that Elusive Dream needs to improve to win the World Hurdle. However that’s the case for 99% of novices go into open company, and it’s not a valid enough reason to exclude them from ante-post calculations, imo.
Elusive Dream was available at between 32 and 27 on BetFair all summer. I think he’s now around a 24 chance. If you can only find 14/1 about the horse, you might want to consider changing your bookie.
September 18, 2008 at 09:52 #181454Anyone know what Franchoek will be targeted at this year?
I presumed he’d go for the world hurdle, as doesn’t quite have the pace for 2m but clearly high class, and the owner has one for the Champion Hurdle, and one for the Arkle.
36 on BF seems pretty big..

Un-decided as of yet, between trainer and owner.
September 18, 2008 at 10:08 #181457Out of interest Grass, what have you got the World Hurdle as rating-wise? I’d like to take a dim view of it at face value myself for as much as I love the Drever I think he’s over-rated, but given the time clocked It’s got to be approaching mid-160s for me.
As I said, I like Elusive Dream, but my trepidation surrounding the World Hurdle stems mostly from the National Spirit, where although he went too quickly from 4 out I wasn’t impressed with his stamina as a potential WH contender. As (clearly) a massive fan of his, what could you offer someone like myself who has fears based on his Fontwell effort and the fact that his best run to date came over 2m4 at Aintree?September 18, 2008 at 16:51 #181508I’ve got 165 and 164 respectively about Inglis and KB for the World Hurdle, Friggo. I understand that they have OR’s of 172/171 and Chasers and Hurdlers have them on 169/168.
As for Elusive Dream, I actually think that Fontewll race was a real stamina test – much more so than a trip of 2m4f would suggest. They were hard at it from a long way out, and it took a really dour staying effort from Lough Derg to win it. A proven stayer like MWDS was legless at the end, and another in Refinement could only manage the one-pace too.
ED tends to race prominently – has done in almost all of his hurdles starts – and I think a little more cover in his races would see him get 3m without too many problems. He does have a reliance on top-of-the ground though, so I’m partially banking on Claisse providing his usual going for the Thursday, as far as a World Hurdle tilt is concerned.
Stamina-wise though, I’m confident Elusive Dream will get 3m, though I would hesitate to I was certain.
