Currently browsing the holiday websites and seeing some really lovely hotels in Tenerife that can be booked for anywhere between £500 and £700 per person for 5 nights 10th to the 16th of March.
That’s flight, hotel on a b&b basis. The weather will be lovely, the food will be reasonably priced and so will the beers.
From what I’ve read there are plenty of people who already do it and the numbers are growing. Apparently there are bars you can sit in and there’s bookies within them.
I’m sure it will be a bit of the gregarious side for some, but it’s proper racing fans who do it. And the experience at Cheltenham now is frankly awful and a total rip off!
Anyone done it or thinking of doing it this year?
January 30, 2025 at 02:23 #1719148Bookies within them TC, you mean like a punter taking bets?
January 30, 2025 at 12:33 #1719159You dont need to use the Pub ‘bookies’; just turn your wifi off, and use your data. The betting websites cant pick up that you’re not in the UK, when you switch off wifi and use your data.
January 30, 2025 at 12:40 #1719160Ah, explained Wilts. I had a vision of a guy with a sombrero going
round saying “I’ll take your bets senor, very good prices”January 30, 2025 at 12:56 #1719162Some of the bars will, likely, have an unofficial bookie, taking cash bets. Often, a mate of the landlord/lady.
Seen it many years ago in other Spanish resorts.January 30, 2025 at 14:03 #1719164The guy who ran the only bookie in a small town near to me, sold out to Lads. Then moved to Spain, last known news was he was doing ok taking bets from UK punters.
As for using mobile data from a UK number, yes it does work. Beware of using VPNs, as it can generate a multiple account flag from the various IP address, I had some explaining to do with one company. Some bookies can see its a VPN I seem to remember Odds checker picked up on this, billies can.
Depending where I am, I find using data via a mobile and creating a hot spot to use a laptop works well, but I dont pay my bill.. B-).Having worked overseas during a few festivals, Id prefer to be home and go to Cheltenham for one or two days, the buzz of chatting with mates down the pub during the week etc is something I value. And I dont like the sun..
February 25, 2025 at 12:54 #1721360Booked up for 5 nights Costa Adeje 10th to the 16th.
Cost a bit more than what I was originally hoping but the Mrs liked a looked of a particular hotel that has good kiddy facilities so you have to play ball really.
It just seems a far better overall experience. I know Cheltenham are aware they need to up their game and have made changes to restrictions about where you can take a drink and things like car parking etc. But the cost is still exorbitantly high and the weather always liable to be miserable.
Videos I’ve seen on YouTube paint a favourable image and I’m willing to give it a try.
February 25, 2025 at 13:17 #1721362Sounds good, Tiz

I’ll be sat with my feet up, in the living room recovering from hernia op (this Saturday).
February 25, 2025 at 15:50 #1721368Oh ouch Wilts, I hope that all goes smoothly, so at least you can sit
in comfort watching the festival.February 25, 2025 at 16:03 #1721372Cheers BigG
Inguinal hernia – some days it looks like i have 3 bollox
This Saturday, at local private hospital, although an NHS appointment.
Horses for Saturday’s big races will have to be selected, with bets, on Friday evening.February 25, 2025 at 16:19 #1721376I had the same operation two years ago. Kept having to “pop it” back in, so to speak. It was weird to begin with but I got used to it after it happened so often. Lie flat on the bed and manoeuvre it back up (apologies to anyway eating their tea). Anyway the operation was quick and simple. It was quite sore for a few days afterwards and a bit of an effort sitting down and standing up. You must not strain for a week or so afterwards – they’ll tell you not to lift anything heavier than a kettle (so your mobile will be fine to place bets!). I do a lot of walking and it was very painful leading up to the operation, but it’s 100% better now. Definitely recommended and worth the short-term discomfort. All the best.
February 25, 2025 at 16:24 #1721377Cheers Cymro
Yeah,i’ve lost count of number of times i’ve got back home, after a walk, whether it be out with pals or back from shopping mall, and had to lie on the bed for 10 mins so it goes back in and the dreadful pain around my hips disappears. Relief
Aware of the post-Op pain, discomfort and what not to do in the weeks after; bit of a nuisance, but hopefully it’ll be worth it.
Cheers
February 25, 2025 at 17:19 #1721379Have a good week TC and all the best for the op Wilts.
February 25, 2025 at 18:17 #1721381Cheers Richard
February 25, 2025 at 19:31 #1721385I’ll provide as detailed a report regarding my experience of Costa adeje for Cheltenham as Wilts so kindly has for his hernia op

Let’s hope there’s a brighter side to our stories endings!
February 27, 2025 at 19:46 #1721441I’ve had a quick look online to do this next year. I’ll be going with wor lass and our 2 year old son and will also be looking at a family hotel in close proximity to a sports bar with Guinness on tap.
I await your report with interest, Tiz.
