First off – Hello all. I’m David, 28 and I live in Newmarket, which is extremely handy for me with the 2 great courses on my doorstep but always worrying that if you go into 5 different pubs in the town you’ll get 5 different winners… for the same race!
Really looking forward to a cracking flat season this year and I can’t wait for the Guineas next month.
Anyhoo… A few years ago I was in the Alan Brazil Racing Club which ideally for me was based in Newmarket at Geoff Huffer’s yard on Hamilton Road. Sadly for us Cockney Rebel was not one of our horses though we did have limited success with Raza Cab on a few occasions. For one reason or another the club collapsed but it gave me a real taste for syndication / ownership and I suppose more importantly not just being someone watching the horses work on the gallops, I had (albeit very small) an interest in a few of them that we were watching.
I’m giving some serious thought into getting back into a club of some variety and I wanted to know if anyone else on here has any good / bad experiences of such. I read Elite Racing is too big with x thousand members you feel more like a number than a person.
Ideally I’d like a Newmarket based one as it would be handy for me logistically, and I’m not adverse to a 5.30 / 6.00am start up on the gallops to watch the horses work. There’s something a bit magical about seeing and hearing the horses cantering up Warren Hill at the dawn of the day…
I’d appreciate any information anyone can offer and look forward to chatting to you all on the forum in the future.

April 19, 2009 at 20:22 #222618Hello,
As an alternative to Elite which I agree can be too big for some, why not try the Racegoers Club, we enjoy stable visits with them all over the country, including Ed Dunlop and Henry Cecil at Newmarket in recent times, and there’s usually just one coachload of people, maybe not more than 30 of us, so it’s quite cosy, and we’re also in an ownership group with them, a horse with Alan King. It’s not that expensive at all.
I would also recommend Kachina Racing, they are starting up a racing club and this year they will be having 3 horses with 3 different trainers.
You will be guaranteed an owners badge when the horse runs. Check out their website. Some people mock these small owner’s clubs as being a rip off, but if you enjoy the fun and spirit of it, then it’s the only chance you can get of being in the paddock which is a great feeling actually if you’ve never done that before, amongst all the big priced winners you’ll be getting of course

April 19, 2009 at 21:47 #222634Hi Deleerious
It very much depends on what you are looking for from your ownership experience and also how much you have available to spend.
If you just want to be able to stand in the parade ring and (hopefully) winner’s enclosure having cheered on ‘your’ horse then some of the bigger ‘professional’ syndicates might suit you well as they tend to organise stable visits etc pretty well.
If you are looking for the opportunity to land a ‘touch’, share in the prizemoney and possible resale value of a good horse then you will be better of with one of the smaller ‘amateur’ syndicates.
The latter will be more expensive but you have the benefit of sharing in the financial success if you happen to own a good one.
April 20, 2009 at 14:45 #222731Thanks Tuffers,
I suppose I’m not that interested in having any re – sale / prize money, just more an inside track on how the horse is training etc so from this I would suggest one of the slightly larger syndicates may suit.
Don’t get me wrong I’m not willing to blindly put my money into something with no return. To know when our horse / horses were in with a "good chance" and I should take a punt would suffice.
