Quite true, John.
Dunguib still came out best of the Irish contingent, failing only to beat two solid novice hurdlers from this side of the Irish Sea.
I still don’t think he did the horse any favours. He may not be Pegasus, but he would have been closer with a more experienced pilot in the saddle, in my opinion.
Id agree with this. It was a strange choice of route and had a more experienced jock been on board then who knows. That said the first two deserved their places and i wouldnt like to see the young boy being hounded.

He clearly isn’t a fan of jumping the hurdle’s.
March 16, 2010 at 14:02 #282829Well done for anyone that backed Menorah
That’ll be me then! The irony is that if PaddyPower hadn’t been offering their Dunguib money back offer I probably would’ve left the race alone.
Still, I don’t thing Dunguib ran all that bad of a race. If I owned him I wouldn’t be as annoyed as I would’ve been if I owned Get Me Out Of Here; he’d have pissed up if they’d not moved that final hurdle.
March 16, 2010 at 14:03 #282830But Bosranic, you have to take into account the horse still is not the best of hurdlers, and he needs to be switched off, I would imagine the jockey rode exactly to instruction, can’t fault him to be honest.

I mentioned in my analysis before the race that Menorah was not a great hurdler, yet Richard Johnson had the experience to ride him not too far off the pace and attack early.
He possessed the same attributes as Dunguib – strong traveller, turn of foot – yet the two of them were given very different rides.
In fairness to the jockey, Dunguib has generally raced that way, so connections will be more the wiser now.
It will be interesting to see what they do with him next season.

Denman wasn’t a great fan of jumping hurdles…
March 16, 2010 at 14:06 #282833Ouch, that was a sore one.
Ironically, in spite of Dunguib’s defeat, I thought he hurdled better than ever before.
I do subscribe to the opinion that a more experienced jockey would have fared better than the Cheltenham hurdling debutant, B. O’Connell.

March 16, 2010 at 14:29 #282853Best horse won Menorah even got to the front a bit too soon I thought.
March 16, 2010 at 14:34 #282856Menorah was defo the best on the day…..
Dunguib was a let down but Sizing Europe won after he bombed out before so their is hope for us allMarch 16, 2010 at 15:03 #282870AnonymousInactive- Total Posts 17716
What a bummer and a lesson learned……..cantering round Leopardstown isn’t Cheltenham
Dunquib ran a cracker though but the engine petered out when it mattered.
Well done anyone who backed the winner…..the effin thing beat me for asn accumalator last time and I said he was a monkey……more like a panther today. Had Get Me Out Of Here won I may well have shot myself by now
Could kick myself for not sticking with Sizing Europe who I supported in the Champion Hurdle…….I was so sure he wouldn’t find when it mattered after looking beat when Captain Cee Bee fell in Ireland.
Biggest shock I got was seeing him trade at 8 on Betfair.
Hope someone made a right fee quid.
March 16, 2010 at 15:54 #282922Egg on face ….I must appologise to the memory of the late Golden Cygnet for ever comparing Dunguib to him.
Even allowing for, shall we call it, "a less that perfect ride"

Given the amount of confidence behind Dunguib, the jockey rode a fair enough race, imo. Had every chance from around 2 out, but simply got done for toe when it mattered.
Could’ve happened to anyone, and the horse is plainly going to need much further, or much softer ground, to be a force at the top level.March 16, 2010 at 16:49 #282948I thought O’Connell held on for just a touch too long and was in a poor position and too wide when it mattered.
Menorah and GMOOH kicked at exactly the same point that Dunguib did in the bumper last year. Kicking on at that point in the race can quickly take 3-4 lengths out of the field.
At that point Dunguib was about 7 or 8 horses wide and lost all chance there for me.
Don’t want to take anything away from the winner though because just before that point there was a scary moment for him when he seemed to jink (is that even a word?) quite badly and Richard Johnson did well to quickly recover from it.
Dunguib has let me down in a huge way today in a hell of a lot of bets, really similar to what Binocular did to me last year, so maybe Dunguib will come back to Cheltenham next year and be unfancied in a race and absolutely bolt up!
March 16, 2010 at 17:30 #282966They want Dunguib to run in the Ascot Gold Cup? Patkai will eat him for breakfast on the firm ground.
Menorah had awesome form on better ground , disappoing LTO on reall bad ground and was always going to be better on this ground today.

That jink did Get Me Out Of Here no favours whatsoever as he lost momentum and having initially switched to the inner eventually switched back around Menorah to make his final challenge. The shortened run in was the final nail in the coffin. Johnson was always in the better position.
March 16, 2010 at 18:37 #282982I just wanted to add I don’t believe Brian O’Connell did a great deal wrong. The horse was put in the race to win and just didn’t pick up sufficiently. Perhaps the ground was a factor and/or he was just meeting two better horses.
March 16, 2010 at 18:49 #282986Would love to hear the jockey’s take on the race after the event, and with the benefit of hindsight whether he would have done anything differently.
Luke Harvey on fivelive called it spot on for me in-running, when at a crucial stage in the race he said he ought to have been a lot closer than he was.
I’d also question the decision to take the wide route round the outside aswell…
March 16, 2010 at 18:54 #282987Should the front three clash again, I would be more than hopeful of Dunguib emerging victorious.
