If Siegemaster is a pure mudlark it doesn’t really tally with the fact he ran the best race of his career at last year’s Festival.
The ground on the Friday at Cheltenham was very tacky holding ground (despite what Claise would tell you) which suits him down to the ground. The times back this up.
Siegemaster needs cut in the ground to be seen at his best. Dessie has stressed this several times, including on ATR on Monday before his run at Navan. AP got off him at Christmas and said that the ground (Yielding to Soft) was too fast for him and that he couldn’t go with Casey Jones and Trafford Lad when they quickened.

I can see why What A Friend heads the market for this race, and indeed have backed him to small stakes, but I’m really begin to warm to the chances of Killyglen. Heavy ground form is unreliable at the best of times, but his beating (well, annihilation) of Chief Dan George at Ayr last time marked him out as a novice of real potential.
The fancy prices have gone, but 25/1 is still tempting.
February 23, 2009 at 12:20 #211887I can’t see past What A Friend. PN is already talking about him as a future Gold Cup horse.
It’s the bookmakers who have got me confused.
Cooldine was a very decent hurdler if not a great one and there will probably be more wins to come over fences.
He made such a hard job of beating Forpadydeplasterer I would have to question though if he is good enough to win at Cheltenham. He’s a good horse but I wasn’t impressed by him at all.
When Trafford Lad beat Forpadydeplasterer in the Grade 1 Drinmore Novice Chase at Fairyhouse by over 5 lengths the bookies virtually ignored it.
This fellow beats the same horse by a shorter distance under enormous pressure from Ruby Walsh and all of a sudden the form based round the same group of horses is good enough to make him 6/1 joint fav.?
I can’t see the Irish backing this one of the boards and fancy this prize will stay at home.

Well if you are right I have probably done my money. Strange he is a half brother to Our Vic who is probably best on good to soft or better and by a sire in Lord Americo who is a strong influence for good ground performers.
February 23, 2009 at 14:43 #211895As one who tipped What A Friend for this race months ago, I haven’t witnessed a performance from any other horse which would change my mind at this stage. However, as we know, the RSA is a tough old race to win.

ARISTO,
dont underestimate Forpadydeplasterer, its solid form!February 23, 2009 at 23:03 #211979Forpadydeplasterer is useful nothing more. He’s so one paced over any trip.
I’m another who tipped up What A Friend months ago and there’s nothing I’ve seen in opposition that worries me. Cooldine is decent but lacks pace and Id be surprised and disappointed if Nicholls’ horse can’t take care of him.
February 24, 2009 at 00:07 #211988February 24, 2009 at 00:14 #211989I would have fancied the R+SA for Forpadydeplasterer but apparently after his defeat last time to cooldine it was decided the arkle would be the way forward if I remember…
February 24, 2009 at 01:24 #212001I don’t know that Siegemaster is an out and out mudlark so much as an out and out stayer and personally the race I’d like to see him go for is the National Hunt [Novice] Chase.
February 24, 2009 at 01:30 #212002On the evidence so far it appears that ForPady doesn’t stay 2m5f imo so a strongly-run Arkle would be his best chance. He travels so well, you’d have to fancy he’ll be going well, it just depends what he finds. Anyone think he’s a bit of a bridle horse (having said that he found plenty for pressure in the Irish Arkle when just beaten)?
Given that the Arkle doesn’t look vintage this year, I’d give him every chance in a strongly run race on better ground than he’s encountered in Ireland this season.

I think the Arkle has always been his target. Trainers often put their Arkle contenders over longer distances in their prep races as Tidal Bay was last year. I agree, Forpady looks a cracking each way bet IMO

Ian,
this horse has had Arkle written all over him since running a cracking
race against the likes of Fiveforthree, Venalmar, Trafford lad etc in last years Ballymore at Cheltenham, which was a trip too far, he will surprise you in the Arkle!February 24, 2009 at 05:19 #212036AnonymousInactive- Total Posts 17716
No he won’t, GWILSON77. Man, I’d love to be your ante-post bookie.

I wouldn’t go as far as Equitrack has though racing is a funny old game and it takes a fair bit to truely surprise me.
February 24, 2009 at 16:12 #212069Does anyone know if JP McManus has anything lined up for this? I fancy Gone To Lunch, but would like to know whether McCoy is available.
Ta.
February 24, 2009 at 17:44 #212080Don’t think he has much of a hand Wichita Linemen is still entered but holds other entries also
