I like Lilywhite Gesture in the beginners chase at Ballinrobe tomorrow and have also had a small go on Broke Away on her first start across the ditch in the bumper at Newton Abbot. Both at 6s.
August 29, 2017 at 01:13 #1316095Cheers Grass,
I just had a very good day today, I did have the 4 of them permed ew, along with Midnight Malibu at a price, and also Home Cummins, so very happy.
Especially happy with Brave Spartacus, as I got him much bigger than his SP of 5’s, and I was fairly confident the whole way round. I know him pretty well, he gave me a smasher of a payday 2 years back in The Summer Plate, and despite being at a relatively small yard, she’s done incredibly well with him, and has him back to near his best.
After today, I’m definitely having a play tomorrow, and as it was a good day, I’ll be playing 2 lines, one at Epsom, and with this thread in mind, one at Ballinrobe. Ballinrobe is my luckiest track in Ireland, and one of my favourite tracks overall, I’ve had some crazy bets come off there (and without jinxing myself, obviously some bad ones too lol)
Good luck with Broke Away tomorrow, and I will cheer her on for you.
I’m very interested in Lilywhite Gesture myself, but have eventually plumped for Double Speak. I gave his last race a good look, as I was interested in the Giggs horse, Just Cause, but it was this guy who made the notebook, and I’m having a go. I think both of ours look overpriced in this, and I see a forecast happening. In fact, the JP horse, A Year To Remember, is probably worth considering. JP has sent a good few of his lesser lights here with some success over the last few years, and with Jody McGarvery up, she might just outrun her odds of 16’s, though her last run was dismal. It’ll probably be a tricast.
As I said, I’ll be having a go at the track, though some of them will be for the perms only, as may be too short, especially Valgor Du Ronceray in the first.
I like Banjo in the next, has to step up a bit, but wouldn’t be the first to do just that on their handicap debut, and is another who appeals with McGarvey up. When you’re doing these perms, you want a horse with a good chance of making the frame at the very least, and that applies to Wee Tiger, who’s too big on his own at 8’s anyway. Queeny won very nicely a couple of months back, and although it would be unusual for me to side with a horse who’s mark hasn’t been reduced, I just think in this heat, the 14’s for her just looks a bit daft. The Game Changer is an old notebook horse of mine on here, and I’d be amazed if he isn’t involved here. That should lead me nicely into the beginners chase, and what should be my last bet(s) of the day, but I’ll probably end up with Hazy Shadow in the last.
Bit of fun since playing up the winnings then, but really looking forward to this card, and the pressure is seriously off as due a proper “off day” soon anyway, and I’ll enjoy this penultimate meeting at the track, win or lose.
August 30, 2017 at 00:29 #1316170No joy on Tuesday then, but as I said it was just a bit of fun, and much to my relief, very small stakes, and no harm done. Last word to Queeny, who’s 14’s wasn’t daft, it was actually skinny lol
Wee break now, but I will try and catch the 1705 at Worcester, as Sonneofpresenting looks a promising type, while I’d like to see how Gentleman Jon is doing, and also how Riverside City is doing for his switch to Jonjo.
August 30, 2017 at 00:40 #1316173Nice to see The Game Changer winning over his trip after being mucked about with in the spring (Irish National then a big Grade 1 FFS).
Would like to see Valgor du Ronceray back over fences- Sportinglife or somesuch said he “didn’t take to it” but I think his jumping will brush up OK albeit it was good for him to get round, and win, over hurdles today.
As for mine:
Lilywhite Gesture: that’ll teach me not to believe that when one of my selections does well (Theatre Wine) doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s so wonderful that every horse in the vicinity automatically has its form elevated to gold status.Broke Away: meh. That’ll teach me not to just back something on the strength of briefly thinking it looked OK when watching about half a race whilst concentrating on some other horse I fancied, and not bothering to check its video replays, times and form against its rivals properly.
No time or inclination for that sort of proper work before tomorrow so just bunged a 10p EW treble on Gentleman Jon, Shantou Tiger + Rebel Yeats and let that do
August 31, 2017 at 09:09 #1316260Delighted to see The Game Changer win, always liked him, but you do get the impression that they’re not quite sure what to do with him.
Not our finest 24 hours on this thread, but I wouldn’t be dwelling on it too much, there’s been more bad than good lol I agree with what you said about Lilywhite, and it’s something I’ve done many at time. It could be worse, you could have said that Queeny was a daft price at 14’s lol
One last go for my old pal Aranhill Chief tonight at Bellewstown. A rare spin over timber for him, and he does look well treated, not ran off a mark like this for a while. He’s been as good as ever this summer, and I’m glad I called beforehand that I wouldn’t be having as much on him last time, as it did look a big ask. I’ll judge him on his 2 previous runs, and also judge him on his last run over hurdles, which wasn’t too shabby, and reads quite well now. There’s the worry that is merely a freshener for The Kerry National, but I really think he can do this. Bryan Cooper is a very interesting jockey booking, and though I’ve already had 2 smashing payouts from him this summer, I’d be delighted if he can give me a proper big win tonight, and and this would be the 4th summer in a row he’s did just that. 16’s just now, I’ll top up should he go bigger, but there will no doubt be a few Non Runners.
August 31, 2017 at 10:30 #1316267No bets today, I’m going to keep my hands in my pockets and wait till inspiration strikes. Good luck with Aranhill Chief, hope he goes well for you again.
September 1, 2017 at 00:49 #1316350No joy Grass, he ran well for a good bit, but well beaten in the end. As I said, I suspected it could have been purely a pipe opener for The Kerry National, and that may be the case, we’ll see. Owes me nothing though, and I might not have got the win this summer, but those 2 chunky each ways will keep me going.
I thought the winner earlier on the card, Young Turk, looked like one to keep an eye on, and I’ll certainly be keeping him in mind for the season.
September 1, 2017 at 07:41 #1316360Ah well, like you say he owes you nothing.
Had a look at Down Royal card but nothing jumps out. Field for 3m hurdle bit disappointing. I don’t know if Rashaan will get the trip. I had a stroll round the course yesterday and there is plenty of give round the back. It was sunny all afternoon and supposed to be dry today but there’s a lot of body in the grass which will hold in the moisture and not much breeze. I’ve taken 6s that Elliot can get old Dedigout back in the winner’s enclosure. If I’m wrong and Rashaan or Cap D’aubois turn out to be 3m stars then at least we have another good horse to watch.September 1, 2017 at 17:22 #1316399I like Trevisani and reckon he might cope with the hike at Newton Abbot in the 3.25 tomorrow so took the 12s E/W.
September 2, 2017 at 11:57 #1316472I thought Dedigout was a very interesting runner last night, but for what seems like the 40th time in the last 2 years, he was a Non Runner. One of those Giggs horses, who’s seasonal plans, I’m sure connections don’t even know.
Small bets today again for me, with nothing really jumping out. Like one or 2 at Newton Abbot, and managed to nab the bigger prices for Ballinure. If pushed, I’d say Yes Man at Wexford would be my #1 over the jumps today.
Looking forward to The Kerry National entries this week. It’ll all be about Coneygree when the entries get published, and I’m hoping to see Flaxen Flare in there.
Good luck with Trevisani today.
September 2, 2017 at 12:14 #1316476Thanks VTC. Elliot says Dedigout going to Doncaster sales. I didn’t realise he had bled in the past, dunno why NR but maybe did it again in training. At his age they probably reckon not worth perservering.
September 2, 2017 at 12:16 #1316479Aah, cheers Grass, I didn’t see that. He looked a good prospect at one point, and even got a Gold Cup entry a couple of years back, but probably not going to achieve anything now. He’s clearly had issues, which is a shame.
September 2, 2017 at 18:17 #1316512So much for our selections in the 3.25. They didn’t do terribly badly I just think that was a good race with some talented young horses in it. Impressed with Golden Birthday doing it so easily despite not hurdling that well- would love to see him over a fence. I see he’s by the same sire as Young Turk. The runner up was quite badly hampered by the faller and did well to get by so many.
WD with Wagon Wheel today btw, trainer said beforehand he’d place and you were both right!
September 3, 2017 at 10:43 #1316534Yeah, no complaints in that race, going down to a winner like that, he was very impressive. I’m very keen on this Young Turk, and had I noticed that about the sire, then I might have considered him, as he does have some very nice offspring.
Yeah, very happy with The Wagon Wheel. The 25’s paid for the day, but only for a small profit. Kicking myself a wee bit for the very small stakes, but when I consider how the rest of them ran yesterday, then I shouldn’t be complaining.
An easy day to pass over today, but when I get in tonight, I’ll have a look at how Beyond The Clouds gets on at Worcester. I bet him for The Bumper last year, but he didn’t make it. I still think he’s a nice prospect, but he’s a short price, and no way am I betting today.
September 6, 2017 at 17:36 #1316771Greenasgrass, I’ve really enjoyed this thread during the summer. I don’t bet too often in the summer so I did not have much to add myself, but it made for interesting viewing.
Well done to you and VtC, you have both had some nice returns, and some very nice prices too.
September 6, 2017 at 20:57 #1316796Thanks Lemons, there was more yakking than betting on this thread (if I put a pound on each way I think I’m the last of the big spenders) but it has been fun to do. Maybe I will do a proper DLAP thread for winter and do the sums. If I write “0.5pt E/W” it will sound a bit professional and nobody will know that half a point actually means 50p in my case, right?

Glad you enjoyed it, hope we can all get a winner or two at Listowel to lead us into autumn
September 7, 2017 at 16:02 #1316841Cheers Lemons, good idea from Grass, and enjoyed it myself. Some nice horses on show, and glad to get a couple in the bag, though I’m still get over the run from Go It Alone a couple of months back lol
Grass, would be good to see you do a thread on DLAP.
