Thought I was in with a chance of some ew money on Friday night, but she weakened out of it near the end.
Definitely having a play today Grass. Decent day yesterday, so having another go, as yet again the Sunday racing looks decent. Had a saver on Mattmu at Ripon in the big one, and absolutely delighted when he came in. Didn’t mention it on the race thread itself, as he was Ham’s only go, and as it only appears that it’s you and me on this thread, I think I can get away with a wee aftertime lol. Haven’t been betting much on that many Saturdays recently, but also had a fair go on Singeur in the consolation ew at 25’s, and he didn’t let me down. On the face of it he shouldn’t have had a chance, and despite his wretched record at 6f, I know him better than any other flat horse at the moment, and he’s never been better. I really did think he would win. Short price for me, but also stuck with Defoe at Newbury, and got a small ew return from Vibrant Chords. The only disappointments were Growl, and I also had a few quid on Belgian Bill, but I was kinda pleased he didn’t perform, as I have a prize in mind for him, and if he goes down another couple of pounds, that would be smashing.
Anyway, this is a jumpers thread, back to the jumpers lol
I eventually had a look at Theatre Wine after your recent comments, and that 16’s looks more than generous, and I’ll be having a go. His stablemate Cecil Corbett also looks overpriced at 8’s, and I’ll be with him as well.
The 1510 at Southwell is a very nice race for this time of year, and I’m hoping the 2lb drop for Midnight Shot can make the difference. He’s been a revelation over the larger obstacles, and although he eventually finished well back, he ran well for a long way in The Summer Plate, and he’s surely worth a risk here at around 10’s.
I’ll have a few on the flat as well, but that’s it for todays jumpers.
Best of luck
August 20, 2017 at 22:48 #1314694Theatre Wine got a soft lead, so her jumping was never under pressure and the hunt round will have done her good. It didn’t look a very strong race but she stuck at it alone in unpleasant looking conditions so bonus points for that. Also still looked a bit green and jumped left quite often, so more scope for improvement perhaps.
Disappointed to see Cecil Corbett not run to form for you, as he seemed to be travelling nicely at Down Royal when brought down, but the weather at Tramore looked yuk and I suspect the going may have been softer than the official yielding by the time of his race. I will look out for him if he gets good ground in the near future.
Presenting Julio was a NR so I’ve put the stake money on Cup Final at 7-2 in the 6.30 at Hexham tomorrow. I know he and Midnight Shot haven’t covered themselves in glory since but their race at Hexham was a good one and he looks a big galloping horse to suit the track (I knew this and was stupid to back him at Market Rasen just got tempted by his price then).
Btw you didn’t really aftertime Mattmu as you included him on your DLAP thread. And nobody would count Sternrubin either for the same reason nobody will ever be able to accuse Triptych of aftertiming Eminent even if she ever forgets to say she’s backed him…we know yiz are
about those horses.
Good luck if playing tomorrow
August 21, 2017 at 00:16 #1314701Thank you Grass for Theatre Wine. If you hadn’t highlighted her I probably wouldn’t have reviewed her races, but I’m glad I did. Yeah, soft lead I suppose, and I could hardly look at each jump (well the jumps I could see), but I thought she did alright, and she just has to have another win in her at the very least. As I said, I had a go on her today, and I was very, very happy. I missed Cecil Corbetts race, as I lost signal on my phone, but having read the RP Comments, I don’t really see the need to give it a watch haha!
Yeah, that Hexham Race hasn’t really worked out, and Midnight Shot was poor again, but I think you must have a chance back at the track, and that price looks fair to me.
Thanks for Mattmu, and I did feel a bit better that he had made the DLAP thread, but I don’t always back every horse included in the exactas, trifectas etc, I don’t have any hard and fast rules to it. Yesterday was one of those days though where it really did work out perfectly. You’re certainly right about Sternrubin though, I never miss him……….I’m expecting The Cesarewitch entries soon, and desperate to see him in there.
I’ll definitely be playing tomorrow, after Theatre Wine today, but struggling to dig out a jumper. I like Banff in the 1900, but very definitely too short for me. I’ll bet a couple on the flat though, and I’ll be sticking them up on DLAP thread.
Good luck tomorrow
August 21, 2017 at 22:15 #1314806So much for Cup Final. I thought he jumped quite well for the most part- in fact better than when 2nd to Midnight Shot as he didn’t hang in the air as much- and seemed to be travelling reasonably OK. Trip should’ve been no problem as he’s won over 3m2f hurdling. But no dice, he just didn’t go with them at all. He drifted a bit beforehand so don’t know if he wasn’t quite at himself or what. Might be a difficult horse to catch on the right day. I’ll sit tight next time and wait to see what the money is doing.
August 21, 2017 at 23:34 #1314819Yeah, he just looked a bit flat, didn’t he. I just wonder if the effort both he and Midnight Shot put in that day, has taken a bit of a toll on the pair of them.
The run of Banff was a pleasant reminder of why I don’t bet odds on shots.
August 24, 2017 at 00:06 #1315169My strange little friend Newton Geronimo runs at Stratford tomorrow. Nico de Boinville who rode him for his hurdles wins is back on board. I’ve taken 8-1.
Bryony Frost takes some weight off Braqueur d’Or and the ground is good so I’m on at 3-1.
Did a little double on them too. And an even littler treble with Actress at York.
Can’t find anything at Fontwell.
August 24, 2017 at 00:40 #1315174No bets for me over the jumps today Grass, so I’ll be cheering your picks on. I did have a look, but just couldn’t dig anything out. Three “Midnights” running, but doubt I’ll bet any of them, though I might have a small forecast on the pair at Fontwell.
August 24, 2017 at 09:43 #1315203Famous last words from me Grass, and I’m now looking at Oathkeeper & Flavianna at Killarney.
August 24, 2017 at 23:25 #1315399Oh well. Newton Geronimo jumped quite well and tried hard but is perhaps not as natural over a fence as some. Midnight Cowboy travelled and jumped very well and I suspect won more handily than it looked. A thoroughly deserved win. He’s quite a big horse and only six so may well have a little bit more maturing to do. Definitely one to follow.
Braqueur d’Or acquitted himself well even though he was beaten. Jumped nicely for the most part and the winner had the rail which may have counted for the difference. I like that B d’O looked to be making a fight of the finish. I just need to have my money on at the right time!
Speaking of which, I see Presenting Julio won today unburdened by my cash. I didn’t back him as my other 2 had lost. C’est la vie.
August 25, 2017 at 01:22 #1315444We were both in the same boat yesterday then Grass, as I didn’t bet Midnight Cowboy either FFS.
Hopefully we can catch the pair of them the next time. I didn’t bet Cowboy as he had looked too quirky for me in the past, and not worth risking at the short price, but different animal today, and very much back on my radar.
August 25, 2017 at 23:54 #1315707Good card at Killarney tomorrow.
In the 2.35 I’ve backed Hallmark at 11/2 win and have a couple of E/Ws as 1/4 odds are available on the 4 places- namely Definite Soldier at 25s (I ignored Galway as he had run poorly there in the past and his wins have been on good) and Lasoscar at 16s (ran well LTO).
In the 1510 I like little Fire In Soul Jumps quite well and not knocked about in defeat up to now. I have him at 6-1, and a small SF with Bamako Moriviere to beat him, as a sort of saver.
The 1545 will hopefully be a cracker. I know Peregrine Run was well beaten by Rathvinden at Galway but he is very ground dependant and 11/2 is too long assuming the rain holds off. Be nice to watch these two and Conrad in action anyway.
The 1620 contains our friend Devils Bride; I can’t desert him now so I have a bit on at 8s. Lofgren is a nice sort, the McCain horses are going well and I doubt he’s over for a bit of sightseeing in the Ring of Kerry so I added him E/W at 16s, again 1/4 odds.
I can’t sort the first 2 races or the bumpers so left those alone.
Hallmark, Fire In Soul, Peregrine Run and Devil’s Bride are in a small E/W acca.
Good luck if playing. I have a few more bets than normal for me but we’re running out of summer for these horses so thought I might as well have a good go.
August 26, 2017 at 01:24 #1315726It’a very nice card Grass, and plenty of interest. Got to be careful though, as I’ve got so many on the radar, up and down the country, but these are the ones catching my eye just now.
Like yourself, I really like that 1435, and Definite Soldier is crying out to bet at that price. 25’s too big. Abolitionist was a revelation last year. Good enough to land this, but I just wonder if this might actually be a prep run, and could we see him in The Kerry National? I’ll take a chance that is the case, and I might chance another two. Westland Row got back on track last time, after a poor show at Galway, and that 14’s looks generous. It’s easy to forget that Waaheb was the “next big thing” a few seasons back, and things obviously haven’t went to plan. I get the impression they haven’t got him back 100% yet, but I do believe he’s on the way back. Geraghty is up tomorrow, and this might be with a view to a future target, but he’s 20’s, and that’s way too big, and I want to bet him just in case.
Ancient Sands was a disaster of a selection for me in The Galway Hurdle, bringing down my main hope, Ivan Grozny at the first. I thought he was an interesting outsider that day though, and if I can forgive him, then he does look appealing at 12’s.
Yeah, the 1545 looks a cracker, and I actually favour Rathvinden, but I’ll gladly watch the top 3 do battle, without a bet. I reckon Sea Light won’t disgrace himself at 12’s either, but definitely a “no bet” race.
I’m loving this 1620 as well. My old pal Neverushacon is back out, and considering the manner of his win last time, I must have some sort of a bet at 4’s. Again, not my kind of price, but I’m a big fan of him, especially after last time. Yup, Devils Bride jumps out as well, and I’ll be covering him as well. He’s been one of the stalwarts of this thread, for both of us, and it would be great if we could get a win from him lol. Deans Road is a nice horse, and Ruby Walsh an eyecatching booking, but the one I’m also drawn to is The Winkler at 20’s, he has a decent claimer up, and I’ll cover him ew.
I’ll be the same as yourself, and leave the other races alone, I’ve got more than enough other races to cover myself, both here and elsewhere
Not much summer left, but I’m sure we can keep this going until The Kerry National.August 27, 2017 at 01:21 #1315927I ended up leaving the 1435 alone, just too many questions, and none the wiser about the original selections. I’ll be interested in Waaheb possibly in a decent handicap in the coming months.
Ancient Sands was very disappointing, and my 2 bets on him have been less than successful, and I doubt I’ll risk him again.
Very happy with the 1620, as got the 20’s each way on The Winkler, and thought for a brief moment that Devils Bride would do it. Grass, what’s your thoughts on Devils Bride, is he worth leaving now, or do you think he still has one in him. I’m torn either way. Finally, Neverushacon was poor, but I knew the story beforehand, when he drifted badly, and I wasn’t surprised. Didn’t stop me betting him though, but I’ll get that back next Spring/Summer.
August 27, 2017 at 22:56 #13160081435 I got lucky with Lasoscar who was a bit of an afterthought bet for me- I haven’t been following him just liked the form. Hallmark ran OK but unspectacular. I expected a bit more from Definite Soldier, bit disappointed with him. Mine Now ran on well for second. Agree definitely a keep-fit exercise for Abolitionist, jockey never moved and the horse isn’t especially good over a hurdle anyway so this was never a target.
1510 Fire in Soul wouldn’t have won anyway, clobbered the 2nd last and fell when a bit tired, under pressure and his slight lack of scope just did for him. Hope he is OK, camera moved on before I could see.
1545 Happy with Peregrine Run and wish I’d had a bigger stake on now! Still scope for a bit more improvement- he was a bit novicey over the first couple and also overall could be a bit more efficient over a fence. Really hope your Alamein is OK, he took a belter of a fall and still wasn’t up by the time he was out of shot
He had jumped OK and the whole way round I was thinking…hmm a big big horse, moved early on from Giggi’s grade 1 horse trainer to their National horse trainer, running over a distance still too short against horses rated 10lb better (when he has a handicap mark ready to go), having a nice jolly round over fences…all going according to plan. Then an unlucky, nasty fall.1620 Yeah I was getting hopeful for Devils Bride too! Just ran out of petrol. I think his chance was at Galway and had been primed for that. Although who knows if he would have emptied then. I think I might leave him now and if he wins without me I’ll just suck it up. Lofgren- meh. Supreme Vinnie popped around quite earnestly. I hadn’t anything on him but quite like him. Winner deserved it. Well done with your 20s on The Winkler, wasn’t even on my radar.
August 28, 2017 at 01:57 #1316016FFS, apologies Grass, I didn’t congratulate you on Lasoscar, what a great shout, and well done with Peregrine too.
Yeah, I still think there’s a long term plan with Alamein, but first things first I hope he is ok, it wasn’t nice, and as for Devils Bride, I have to agree, and I’ll take it on the chin if he does score, though I wouldn’t be missing him if he was a decent price.
I’ve bet The Winkler a few times now, and he’s a bit of a quirky customer, but the important thing is he regularly gets gambled, so was happy to be ahead of it, and the 20’s made a big difference on Saturday.
Had a quick look at the Bank Holiday Cards, and the jumpers who caught my eye were Brave Spartacus, Pads, Masterson, and Mitebeall Forluck.
Brave Spartacus is no back number, and interesting with Brian Hughes up, while Masterson bumped into Fabulous Saga last time, a horse of WPM’s I have big hopes for, and I think Mitebeall is too big a price, track should suit, and I’d rather have him before a few ahead of him in the market.
August 28, 2017 at 14:06 #1316053I have a token bet on Kilbarry Marien in that Downpatrick maiden but nothing else today. I don’t think I’ve ever bet anything at Cartmel and anything I look at for interest’s sake there does no good. I think it’s a track for me to enjoy the scenery in the background till I’ve improved my race reading. Good luck with your lot.
August 28, 2017 at 19:29 #1316074Nice work with Spartacus, kicking myself for not following you as I’ve bet him in the past…mind you all the others I was interested in today duly did no good so I’m glad I didn’t get stuck into the two cards.
Hope you had those 4 in an E/W… - AuthorPosts
