I read in the Post today that connections of Straw Bear say he may miss Haydock on Saturday to wait for the Irish Champion Hurdle. That would mean ducking the mighty Afsoun and a load of plodders to take on Sublimity, Sizing Europe, Harchibald, Jazz Messenger, Aitmatov, Al Eile and Hardy Eustace. A fine bit of placing that would be! I’m stunned none of the Irish big guns were given an entry at Haydock in what has to be the weakest Grade 2 hurdle of the season.
I just had a closer look at the two races and it is extremely weird. The betting is even weirder..they make Afsoun a hot fav to beat Straw Bear and Straw Bear 2nd fav favourite over Sublimity and Harchibald and only behind Sizing Europe.
I don’t know if the betting was out before they expressed doubt about him running against Afsoun but the betting seems crazy.
It’s like they are saying on one hand the horses victory over Harchibald was a fluke and on the other hand they are saying it wasn’t.
I can only think they know for certain that he wont run here as he would surely be favourite to beat Afsoun if not.
I think Ginger could have a field day with one of those books
January 17, 2008 at 09:07 #135886Personally im not a fan of Afsoun, shame really because he is quite a nice horse, but he often ends up too short in the market and doesnt produce the goods when needed.
I think he will probably be shorter than Straw Bear in the market as a result of their run at Cheltenham when Straw Bear needed the run before Kempton on Boxing Day, and Afsoun finished ahead of him. Personally, i dont think that is right, but it doesnt suprise me.
January 18, 2008 at 17:15 #136222Looks like the two will clash tomorrow after all……So much for 3/4 Fav Afsoun and 9/4 Straw Bear…11/8 and 15/8 the latter looking very tempting
As much as I am not a Straw Bear fan I can’t help but think this race will suit him down to the ground unlike Cheltenham..he can surely beat Afsoun or he simply won’t be running in any Champion Hurdle……against my better judgment I am going to bet him just for the hell of it…owes me a few quid from a CH AP bet
January 18, 2008 at 17:43 #136228Seems like someone has had a tickle now 11/10 fav.
January 18, 2008 at 18:15 #136236Don’t know where you’re seeing 15/8 Straw Bear FOF- have a couple of spare million on for me.
January 18, 2008 at 21:19 #136277FoF, will you please answer the following question – if only to allow me to sleep at night without it being on my mind.
You’ve stated so many times that Katchit wasn’t right, and just a few posts back from this you say Katchit wasn’t right the last twice. Where are you getting this info from? How do you know this, who is telling you this?
When the horse ran in the Fighting Fifth, you said the dogs were barking about how ‘not right’ he was before the race (I can’t be bothered to look for the thread but you did say it), yet the horse was backed into a very short price that day.
So please answer the question, please, please, please. Where are you getting your info from that Katchint wasn’t right on it’s last two runs? And surely, if the horse clearly wasn’t right, yet ran two crackers, then we should look no further in the CH should we? That’s assuming the horse will be right in March of course.

January 18, 2008 at 23:40 #136317Carvills…….the bookies were going 3/4 Afsoun 9/4 Straw Bear on Thursday/Friday based on the fact Straw Bear was expected by them not to run suppose……..when the SL website put the runners for today up they forecast the prices…….5/4 Afsoun 15/8 Straw Bear…..which I can get on at….then later a couple of bookies put their prices up they made Straw Bear 11/10fav and had an onslaught of bets on the horse………he is now 8/11 fav.
The SL forcast price is now 6/4 Straw Bear as I type so if I called now………6.38am here…..I would get my balls chewed off plus my bookie would see the 8/11 and tell me to go and get stuffed
As they say if your not fast your last

Don’t worry about being rude – I know very little, and would like to learn of a bookmaker that accepts bets at Sporting Life website prices. I await your PM with interest.
January 20, 2008 at 11:50 #136526For you cheek I have decided to answer you in the way you deserve to be answered.Your not the first to ask but I hope you are the last.
I went racing at least 3 times a week during the last few years UK I bet with Alex. Farquhar and others for more years than I care to remember….that’s Macbet of Edinburgh if you don’t know…..Alex for one laid me a hundred times at the course well before racing and I got prices others never got a sniff at..the reason for that is between him and I…….I could also ask for paper prices from a couple of local bookies where I lived….once you have the working experience I have had with bookmakers maybe you can do what I do………I suggest you get started now and when you have built up relationships like I have then place your own bets
Why on earth would I run down to Western Union and fill in a pile of forms describing what money coming here was for? Then sending you money back and telling lies for your benefit?………are you totally nuts? or Maybe you think I am Santa Clause….Perhaps you weren’t around when 911 happened and don’t know it’s illegal to accept money for betting purposes from outside sources in this country. Whatever the answer is your one naive mofo or you are basically being an ass….don’t ask again
January 20, 2008 at 12:29 #136531Santa Claus?? Do me a favour, pal – Santa Claus is a fictitious character who is far more believable than you.
You carry on in your fantasy world, fellow.
