He was stung by a stingray whilst diving off of Cairns, Australia. The first person, apparantly, to die from a stingray attack in Australia since 1945.<br>Freak accident by all accounts, but what a way to go heh? You spend your life winding up alligators and poisonous snakes and spiders, and you get killed by a placid fish LOL

But is it water resistant? ;)
Yeah, I echo Keith’s comment. My mum loved the guy, his program was her favorite. I enjoyed his antics too.<br>He was refreshing to watch, as well as being a big kid at heart. He ploughed a lot of his earnings back into conservation and animal welfare, for that he has my utter respect.
RIP Steve, you will be sorely missed.
September 4, 2006 at 18:33 #103043On a serious note.<br> The man was a true character. Almost a bloody idiot.
I just think its sad that he wasn’t killed by a crocadile. I think he would have been happier with that.
Shame………..
September 4, 2006 at 18:47 #103044Agreed, the bloke was a total fruit-cake but brilliant !!
RIP
September 4, 2006 at 18:59 #103045"crikey" what a great guy, brave, loved by many, not stupid atall in my opinion, he will be sadly missed and I for one enjoyed his crocodile diaries series, much better than a lot of the crap we see on TV these days like Dr Who and Big Brother to name two.
<br>1962-2006 rest in peace cobber, my condolences to your family. <br>(Edited by Jim JTS at 8:22 pm on Sep. 4, 2006)
September 4, 2006 at 19:09 #103046I’d never seen his shows, but … ironically …
A couple of days ago, I was flicking through the channels and found the start of a prog with a guy who handles venomous snakes.
As I was watching as a snake was trying to have a go at him, spitting venom left right and centre but failing to get him in the eyes, I looked at the guy on the TV and thought:
"your career has a very predictable end, mate, and it’s not through old age retirement"
and then yesterday croc boy gets done in doing one of his wild life progs.
And I can just imagine the stingray saying to the crocs:
"that’s how you deal with him …
… you pussy lizards"<br>

September 16, 2006 at 19:54 #103048Peter Brookes’ Nature Notes cartoon in The Times today is a tad insensitive but highly amusing:
