Starmer knew he couldn’t hold mps back from standing with pickets.
All he can hope for is that those joining strikers don’t make too much noise.Value Is EverythingAugust 3, 2022 at 09:42 #1609907All a bit of a shambles. But it is OK. Starmer is going to clarify the policy – when he gets back from holiday.
August 3, 2022 at 10:09 #1609909a key part of that master plan is to dumb down the general population through an education system that teaches children to repeat rather than think and then inundate everybody with weapons of mass distraction (vacuous television programmes, celebrity culture, blockbuster films, incessant sport, facile music, etc)

In effect, the ‘Feelies’ and ‘Soma’ of Huxley’s Brave New World

August 3, 2022 at 10:16 #1609911I read “Brave New World” again last year. It often gets compared to “Nineteen Eighty-Four”.
The latter is more famous but “Brave New World” is marginally the better book, in my opinion.
Orwell’s dystopia is kept in place by overt and ruthless state control. Huxley’s is more frightening because the people accept it. The police only make one brief appearance, to quell a riot that breaks out when the “soma” is not distributed.
August 3, 2022 at 10:48 #1609914I have never read “Brave New World”.
Might try to make the effort.I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysAugust 3, 2022 at 11:10 #1609916Two of the few books I have read. I would not say that one is better – 1984 is a more personal book. I had forgotten about the feelies in Huxley’s – I did remember Soma. I really enjoyed them.
