A couple of questions for speed figure buffs.
Are speed figures adjusted for the class of the race now?
The reason I ask is that I have just looked through the form of Snowy Morning, who runs at Tramore tomorrow. It’s astounding to me that a horse who was plainly running over the wrong distance last time and finished 44lgth off the race winner can be given a rating as a such for its performance.
Are race speed figures just tracking RPR at the moment or what?

1. No – not in their application
2. Published SFs are not necessarily taken for last race but best in last 3 races or last 6 months or a year – depending who publishes them. SM, for example, won its 2 previous races to the Hennessey.
3. No but Racing Post do fiddle them to suit their expectations of the race result.

That is even more confusing.
Racing Post gave a "weight rating" of 123 to Snowy Morning and a "speed rating" of 122 in the Hennessy. SM’s OR was 150. The race winner Denman had a RP weight rating of 184 and speed rating of 180. The 44 lengths "beating" plus weight carried advantage of SM has clearly been taken into account for that last race rating.January 3, 2010 at 16:48 #267386yes its weird Robert isn’t it?
Speed figures are shite!

Why can’t Our Kes run Sea The Stars close in the Eclipse?
Erm, maybe because speed tells us he’s not quick enough
If all horses are the same they will all run the same times, afraid this isn’t the case hence why the richest punters are those who can exploit speed figures to their advantage.
January 3, 2010 at 17:22 #267391Speed figures (and Beyer figures) are becoming more useless as the days go on. The Americans have realised how pointless Beyer figures are becoming and I’m pretty sure both will fade out in the next couple of years.

Who is talking about Beyer, certianly isn’t me!
The threshold at optimum distance will determin the class of a horse and the more accruate way of determining the threshold is via speed, it seperates the good from the average and its easy to catergorise horses by knowing that level they cant reach.
Avoid small fields with no pacemaker, consider ground and determine the horses optimum threshold then bet, make money and a good living.
speak soon Arsenal have won and im on cloud 9
