Reported on irishracing.com to have suffered a heart attack after the last fence in the 5.50 at Killarney yesterday evening. Pulled up on the run in, he subsequently collapsed and died. RIP.
May 18, 2011 at 11:52 #355922Had the misfortune to view. Horrible and right in front of the stands.
Was more concerned at the time with the 2nd last fence faller who looked tired and fell well tailed off last, took a horrendous fall. Horse didnt have the energy to put his undercarriage out and nose dived into the turf and lay there swishing the tail. Any news?
I dont know what that rider was thinking not to pull it up.
The fatality we know about seemed to jar itsself on landing over the last and didnt do his chances any good at all.
I’ll not be watching any more summer jumping, not for me as I
started in a earlier thread.May 18, 2011 at 14:22 #355956No, I haven’t managed to find out anything about the other faller, but might be something on the hri-racing.ie site next week if it was fatal. They have a list of fatalities each week, but I’ve found it’s not always accurate as they haven’t mentioned a few I knew about before.
TenPlus is pretty good at getting this sort of info so hopefully he might be able to send some light on the situation.
May 18, 2011 at 17:00 #355979Really awful incident as the jockey apparently hit him after the last even though the poor horse was not looking OK – haven’t seen it and can’t bring myself to do so …
Sounds of Jupiter: close up, led before 6th, asserted under pressure from before last, lost action and headed run-in, no extra and collapsed after line, dead
There is no mention of any other fatality – Keep Trading fell 3 out.
PS I’m not a "he"! Even though the equine Ten Plus was!
May 18, 2011 at 18:32 #355990Sorry, TenPlus. I’m not either, even though Black Gold also was a ‘he’.
Yes, jockey did give him a smack after the last, but realised almost immediately that something was wrong and started easing him down. He pulled up just after the finishing line and jumped off. Replay view ended at that point, but I assume Sounds of Jupiter collapsed soon after.
May 19, 2011 at 20:28 #356152Was watching the race myself on ATR. Thought Sounds of Jupiter had gone wrong after the last–very sorry to hear indeed that it was a heart attack and that it was fatal–Davy Russell did jump off as soon as he possible could but alas too late
As for the horse that fell at the 2nd last–was miles out of contention and that jockey should be banned for a very long time given what happened. It is people like that that give the sport of horse racing a bad nameMay 19, 2011 at 21:17 #356158I know this is probably a controversial first post, but I have been a lurker here for ages!
I have watched the replay of this race, and I am disgusted by the behaviour of Davy Russell. He visibly hit the horse – forcefully – four times when it was clear that something was badly wrong; anyone with half an ounce of horse sense should have known that when Sounds Of Jupiter began to stagger to the left after the final fence before losing coordination completely, this was not the behaviour of an obstinate or lazy horse, but instead that of one who is clearly ‘going wrong’ in dramatic fashion. He should never have hit him repeatedly – it makes for seriously uncomfortable viewing, and I’m surprised no one else has picked up on this.
If I were that horse’s owner, I’d be absolutely livid right now. I’m not saying his death would have been prevented by any means – a heart attack is a heart attack at the end of the day – but jockeys at that level should be able to detect when a horse has got a major problem. There was a big outcry in the eventing world a few years ago when Amy Tryon continued over the final fence on a horse that had completely broken down, claiming to have not noticed a problem. Same kind of issue really; it just isn’t on.
I know Russell pulled him up eventually, but IMO he was still far too slow to get off his back. That poor, poor horse – RIP Sounds of Jupiter
May 19, 2011 at 22:35 #356169Having watched replay of race several times i feel that questions need to be asked regarding the jockeys of Sounds of Jupiter & Keep Trading ( the other faller in this race).Sounds of Jupiter actually had a little wobble after jumping the second to last fence & after jumping the last showed positive sign something was wrong but the jockey still drove him hard with the whip before deciding there was a problem!regarding keep Trading it was clear a long way out that this horse had no chance of keeping up with the pace yet the jockey insisted on driving this poor horse on, it was apparent before he even took the fence that he was heading for a fall(which he did!)the horse was already showing signs of tiring. These incidents are just what the anti-racing lobby will use to incite the general public to the "cruelty" of horse racing & this is one reason the powers to be have to investigate these incidents & be seen to be doing so.
