As a new poster I posted asking if anyone had used racing software before but my post has been removed, I presume it was because I used trade names, apologies for that….but the question still remains has anyone actually used any kind of racing software and to what effect please.
October 11, 2007 at 08:04 #118947It may have been me or Cormack that deleted your post.
As, there have been an awful amount of people trying to gain free advertising or promote their products or services we are a little cautious.
I am sure if anybody has used any successful software, they will pass opinion on it’s merits.
Regards – Matron
October 11, 2007 at 09:20 #118952Thanks for the reply and no offence taken, bit naive of me in the first place.
October 11, 2007 at 18:07 #119016Huntingdon –
It was indeed I that removed your post – for the reasons outlined by Matron plus the fact that it was among your first posts as that is often a classic giveaway for potential spammers.
Anyway – sorry about that – hope you enjoy the forum Huntingdon and have better luck with future posts.

A few years ago my brother and I tried some software. I’d better not mention the name for fear or breaking forum rules but we were moderately succesful with it. At that time it was extremely time-consuming entering all the data for each race but it did focus the mind and aid logical thought. I remember the software in question advising a banker bet in a tough-looking Ascot handicap and the horse romped home at 7/1!javascript:emoticon(‘:)’)
SmileOctober 16, 2007 at 18:52 #119911Goodlife,
There is no problem in mentioning the name of the software, as if somebody is interested enough, they can easily do a “Google" search to delve further.
We have just been a bit concerned recently, as people have blatantly tried to gain free advertising for their services with links to sites.

October 16, 2007 at 20:50 #119926Cheers for that Matron, I understand now. The software my brother and I were using was " Pro-Punter". Purely from memory, I think the author’s business was "DSG Software" and I seem to recall that he was based around Manchester.
October 17, 2007 at 00:44 #119975Thanks for that Goodlife, I have since purchased software and have been paper trading it for four days now with some success and tomorrow is the first day of actual placing of bets, so fingers crossed and small stakes to start with
October 17, 2007 at 10:11 #119998Good luck. Hope it works out for you!
October 17, 2007 at 11:32 #120016Yes,I wish you well with that, Huntingdon. At around the same time that I was using Pro-Punter I joined a small group run by one Padraig Kirby (does that name ring any bells with forum members?). He had some very interesting views on the use of computers in the process of horse-race selection. He made the very good point that, unlike chess-playing software , for instance, any computer software which proved very successful in picking winners was unlikely to become widely available.
I have no doubt myself that now, given the enormous data-processing capabilities of modern computers, there will be profitable software.October 17, 2007 at 15:24 #120065I think you really have to get into working on your own software and agree with the point that good software wont be for sale.
A lot of what you might want to do depends on how much you want to put in. I would always go for a manual input method and then concentrate on getting the analysis bit right. You can always pay someone to automate everything and then have them killed and buried in a shallow grave after you’ve made your first million, to keep your secret safe.
Getting a decent grasp of excel is a good start.
I used DGA Pro-punter years ago, I never made anything out of it but I didn’t lose either. It took about an hour to put a race in, OMG !!
October 17, 2007 at 16:52 #120093You’re bringing it all back to me now Dave, it was slow torture inputting all the data required for one race! After having the 7/1 winner I spoke briefly on the phone with the author who apparently hadn’t had the winner himself.
October 17, 2007 at 16:58 #120094Yes goodlife .. twas the good old days, when computers had green screens and nobody had heard of a mobile phone ..
It must have been more than 20 years ago .. I cant remember the input data, I think it was ..
Trainer
Jockey
FSP
Horse name
Days since last run
Position last time out
Total runs
Total prize money won
.. there must have been more but I forget.October 17, 2007 at 17:04 #120098The most succesful one I used at the time was called ‘Form Master’ which was out briefly in the late 1980’s.
It was released by a company in Harrogate who’s name escapes me.
It was very succesful and quite obviously based around VDW’s writings (which was the trigger for me to study VDW in more detail.)
It was taken off the market after about 3 months, it was rumoured at the time that one of the big 3 bookmakers bought the rights and took it off the market.
October 17, 2007 at 17:10 #120101I remember that too Crock, there was an article on the telly about it at the time. The bookies did buy it off them.
October 17, 2007 at 17:32 #120107I didn’t know about that. It just seems to indicate that there is software out there which can do the business.
October 17, 2007 at 18:34 #120125Its not that hard to put together your own software goodlife but it’s very much a case of rubbish in rubbish out.
I written several over the years myself and each time they get a little bit better than last time. It’s a slow learning process, but an enjoyable one. You have to get your head around maths as well, I might add.
You do need excel though.
