Just a general throw-out.
Any good?
I used to subscribe to Smart Sig mag about 10 years ago; some useful stuff, some quantum physics which passed me by.
I had a look at the contents page for the latest edition and it did look a tad too anorakish- even for me.
But any comments from people who do subscribe would be welcomed. I may be wrong in my first impressions.
July 29, 2010 at 21:55 #309836I did subscribe for six months, and, well, I don’t subscribe now.
Their discussion group has potential, but the articles themselves are often poorly written and apparently completely unedited, even if there are some good ideas lurking in there.
Then again, it may just have been because my subscription seemed to coincide with a worrying fixation with World Darts in the magazine…..
July 30, 2010 at 08:43 #309870The old Smartsig hard-copy mag was generally interesting and worth the subs, though perhaps too systems orientated and uncompromisingly mathematical. The attendant e-mail discussion group was novel, very good and entertaining
The re-incarnation as Smartersig coincided with a change of ownership and move to a web-only mag. Haven’t subscribed so can’t comment on it, but for some reason I still receive the discussion group e-mails and although there are occasional bursts of activity, it’s generally pretty quiet. Chat seems to concentrate on the problems of ‘getting on’ and the rarefied world of Betfair Apps
Don’t like the term ‘anorak’ as that tends to be a term used by the lazy to denigrate those who make an effort to thoroughly understand their interests
Perhaps you could enquire about a six month introductory offer or somesuch
July 30, 2010 at 11:34 #309916Its a good "ideas" publication imo, just a bit too much taken up with simplistic back-fitted systems at times but still just about worth the fiver a month. You also get access to utilities and ratings on the website as part of the subscription.
August 3, 2010 at 14:35 #310752CR about right. Most of the neural networks stuff is way beyond me but I do get the occasional idea from the systems tested. Just about worth the fiver as CR says.
