Once again, you’re missing the point Ginge. The government could easily have paid for the “unaffordable” increase in Universal Credit by taking a few quid off their rich mates through capital gains tax.
They didn’t.
It’s like Reverse Robin Hood- take from the poor, give to the rich.
January 4, 2022 at 10:04 #1576491The £20 increase is probably already a real terms cut given the rocketing price of many essential goods and services. Certainly it soon will be with further energy price rises and increased red tape on imports from the EU which came in on 1st January to give two examples.
Perhaps the UC increase should be linked to MPs pay increases, or we could let claimants have a specific vote on it like MPs do for their pay.
January 4, 2022 at 15:13 #1576527I’ll always be grateful to Blair for the energy he put into the peace process in N Ireland; I witnessed too many tragedies at first-hand to take it for granted, although Brexit has put this all at risk again, and has been like Christmas for Sinn Fein.
But the invasion of Iraq, on spurious grounds, destroyed his legacy, all for the sake of buddying up to the USA.
January 4, 2022 at 17:20 #1576534I’m afraid you are correct but what I don’t understand is the personal vitriol thrown at him, Parliament approved the war and I don’t think he had much choice but to follow the USA.
By the way, I certainly did not agree with the war.

I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysJanuary 4, 2022 at 17:27 #1576536I’ve put forward my opinion of the Blair creature earlier in this tread.
He won his elections,in my opinion,by not advocating typical socialist policies.
As regard food banks the most honest opinion of them was given by a man who at the time, several years ago now,ran the biggest private one …………..
when asked ‘why do people use food banks’
his answer ‘because they are free’
and just to round off things a open question to all ………..
name a socialist country where the ordinary people have prospered?January 4, 2022 at 18:36 #1576543Politically there was no reason why Bush and Blair should’ve been so close. Labour (even New Labour) and Republicans didn’t have much in common. What the two men did have was a strong Christian belief.
Suspect that had something to do with their relationship. Bush bible reading and believing you must believe in Jesus to go to heaven. Blair at that time in the process of converting to Catholicism.Value Is EverythingJanuary 4, 2022 at 19:14 #1576546Aux armes citoyen!

Value Is EverythingJanuary 5, 2022 at 10:02 #1576593The petition still rolling along, media campaign against it gathering steam. If only people cared this much about issues that actually matter.
January 5, 2022 at 11:29 #1576600Yes, it is a silly petition Richard.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 5, 2022 at 11:47 #1576603No UK petition is “silly” – once it gets past 34 million (50% of population) verified signatures, that is.
Any of them got anywhere near yet?

Good question. The reply is usually “It was not the right type of socialism” or “It has never been tried properly”.
It will be better next time. Honest.
January 7, 2022 at 19:30 #1576939It depends on what you class as socialist. The Nordic model works pretty well – Norway, Finland, Sweden etc.
