Very sad news that a true icon in our sport has passed away.
July 29, 2015 at 16:21 #1150612Sad news indeed.
July 29, 2015 at 16:21 #1150613What sad news, although 97 is a grand age.
An outstanding broadcaster and a true lover of the sport.
July 29, 2015 at 16:37 #1150657A legend as a commentator, did his homework and it showed combined with a great sounding voice.
And what a fantastic amount of work he did for charities, especially horse ones.
RIP Peter
July 29, 2015 at 16:44 #1150665A true icon of the sport and one whose consummate professionalism was and still is the pinnacle for which all broadcasters must strive to attain.
He truly deserved each of his rich 97 years.
July 29, 2015 at 17:37 #1150745The passing of a true legend!!
R.I.P
July 29, 2015 at 18:14 #1150790Tribute programme on R5 Live tonight at 8.30.
July 29, 2015 at 18:20 #1150798Still the best commentator of the sport ever. Today’s sorry crop of so-called commentators would do well to study his broadcasts and learn from them. RIP.
July 29, 2015 at 18:21 #1150813Very sad, but what a nice age to reach!
Rest in Peace Sir Peter
July 29, 2015 at 18:35 #1150823Very sad news indeed but as others have said he reached a great age.
I had the privilege of meeting him many times and he was, as many others will attest, a perfect gentlemen in every sense of the word. He would invariably be polite and give the time of day and happily chat, even with an upstart like me.
Of course he knew the sport inside out and was well respected – probably about the only journo who could criticise what was wrong in the sport and still be respected and remain friends with those he did criticise. He undoubtedly forgot more about the sport than I ever knew about it. Of course he was a very shrewd punter, although he would happily confess to his failures in that field as well.
He called races in his wonderful dulcet tones and even when the finishes were exciting he was able to convey the excitement without resorting to the shouting histrionics employed by some other commentators – even when it was his own horse winning the race.
RIP Sir Peter, if I drank I would raise a glass to you and say “thanks for the memories”
July 29, 2015 at 19:18 #1150876His king George commentaries are my favourites. The likes of Nijinsky, teenoso, generous etc were sublime to listen to. Can’t think of anybody around now who is anywhere near as good. Along with jonners at the cricket, alliss on golf,Dan maskell at the tennis he was the voice of his sport. Oh for his like again.
July 29, 2015 at 19:19 #1150877Also a tribute piece on ATR at 9
They showed it shortly after the announcement. Worth a watch if you missed it.
July 29, 2015 at 19:55 #1150931A sad day indeed. His commentaries were fantastic but I will never forget his commentary at Cheltenham when his own horse Attivo won the Triumph Hurdle. No hint in his voice or more exictement than to any other race and even announced the winner as being owned by Peter O’Sullivan. A remarkable man who will be missed

What an excellent comment
July 29, 2015 at 20:22 #1151009As a 6 year old I learnt his commentary to the 1977 Derby – “And it’s Hot Grove on the far side, The Minstrel on the near side………” – send chills down me whenever I hear it. It was my party piece. Also Red Rum’s third “you never heard a reception like it at Liverpool, it’s hats off!!” There was Aldaniti and Bob Champion, there was Dawn Run. My god so many wonderful commentaries. He WAS racing for me. I’ll never forget him. Rest in peace The Voice xxx
"this perfect mix of poetry and destruction, this glory of rhythm, power and majesty: the undisputed champion of the world!!!"
July 29, 2015 at 20:49 #1151042There is no other commentator that put so much anticipation into his race calling and as the horses reach the final furlong his voice would reach an exciting crescendo as he pinpointed the horse that was going to come from out of the pack and take the race.
Thank you Sir Peter O’Sullevan, your voice will live on forever in those Classic races that you called home, wonderful memories of a charismatic sporting personality. RIP
