“Horseracing in Singapore, a once rich and powerful mecca for the sport, will come to a shock and abrupt end in October 2024 after the Singaporean government on Monday announced plans to reclaim the racecourse land for redevelopment, resulting in the termination of the sport in the jurisdiction.
A statement released by the Singapore Turf Club read: “The government today announced that about 120 hectares of land in Kranji, on which the Singapore racecourse sits, will be handed back to the Singapore government in 2027 for redevelopment. Singapore Turf Club will close its facility by March 2027.
“The Singapore Turf Club will hold its final race meeting on October 5, 2024, featuring the 100th Grand Singapore Gold Cup.””

June 5, 2023 at 20:26 #1650626Just when I was thinking of putting it on my long-term bucket list to see what their racecourse food was like.
Oh, well….

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"June 5, 2023 at 20:52 #1650628I have to say I was a bit underwhelmed when I went. It was a Sunday afternoon meeting so maybe that was why but it was poorly attended so there wasn’t much atmosphere and I wouldn’t bother going back. Incidentally it was the only place in Singapore where I saw any litter.
June 6, 2023 at 11:08 #1650677I went to a couple of Friday night meetings about 6 years back when I was up there . Like Richard88 points out its the only place in Singapore you see litter , and strong smell of smoking permiates the air and clothes after . The Fridays had a decent crowd , the atmosphere was pretty good , night racing in the City is always good, though its not quite a night at the Valleys , the HK one, or Moonie . The crowd roared home the winners beamed in on the screens from Macau though .
Some good jockeys riding over the two nights , Alan Munro , Vlad Duric , Micheal Rodd and Greg Boss . Most horses Aus or NZ bred but a few Euro breds , and the odd South American and South African .
The plus points , a clean , cheap , safe train right to door , cheap entry , the coffee stall no option but sweet , strong , like tar becomes addictive and quite nice if you want to stay awake for a week . The divis to 5 buck stake gets bit of getting used to and value on punt poor , take out from Tote must be high .The very large rodent appearing out the bushes near to winning enclosure after the last was different and made me shift , god knows what it was .
The movement of horses out in next 18 months , 700 to be exported . Having known a bloke who syndicated horses up there , I have doubts the 700 moving out . Some will just transfer to Malaysian stables , a few decent ones will go OZ or NZ . Cliff Brown when he moved to OZ took a few who have done ok , The Inferno and Ex Ballydoyle Threefourpence who was 4th in Dewhurst and Irish Guineas before moving to Singapore have gone decent in OZ . A few might go Indonesia or some other backwater . Overall the quality of horse in Singapore is average , most wouldnt win off mimimum in lowest class in HK so i would say none will go there .Why use HK owners permit for one out of Singapore .
The demise of Singapore been coming last few years
The track itself is amazing , it poured down one night pre meeting , from train the drainage canals were flowing , I thought no way its going ahead , but the strathayr track drained a treat .June 6, 2023 at 11:10 #1650678Interesting insight, thank you for that.

COMMENT: Singapore Turf Club officials should silence rumour mill
STC is under full control of the government. With Singapore Airlines (also controlled by the government) pulling plug of the International Cup several years ago, the writing was on the wall already.
Also, the locals were not attracted by the sport and STC is not allowed to promote the sport locally. That’s why you cannot find many people in the race meeting there.
That comes as a surprise when Macau continues racing with fewer punters, lower prizemoney and fewer horses.
June 13, 2023 at 03:34 #1651354Another report from Asian Racing Report:
“Multiple first-hand sources told Asian Racing Report that at last Friday’s meeting with trainers, Lim was asked directly when she first knew about the closure. Her response was “2022.””
“Lim let slip that she did not know that the trainers are not the owners of the horses in their stables.”
New definition of ignorant and mismanagement!
