I knew about it – I was saddened at the time.

Didn’t know him, never met him – but I liked him as a commentator, great voice and he just got on with the job and called the races with no smug, smartarse, remarks.

If memory serves Raleigh’s demise started Darren Owen’s racecourse commentating career, as he filled in at Wolves when Raleigh failed to turn up.

I seem to recall the apprentice who won the Crown Plus apprentice series, got to accompany Raleigh to somewhere in Africa, may have been Kenya as part of the prize. Paddy Young springs to mind as one winner.

“And Nashwan is cutting down Top Class as though he doesn’t exist….”

From “this is the best we’ve seen” (Arkle) to “here she comes, the Queen of Longchamp” (Allez France) to that immortal 1977 Grand National (Red Rum), to “Lester’s looking round for dangers, thinks he’s got Buckskin cold” (Sagaro), to “it’s the veteran 10yo, he’s won it at last!” (Sea Pigeon), I thought I’d got all my favourite O’Sullevan lines sorted forever.

But I happened to be on holiday in Sicily in July 1989 and tonight on YouTube was the first time I ever saw Nashwan narrowly beat Cacoethes in the King George in full.

    What a race, what a commentary: https://youtu.be/Dnhe0siVqNg?si=ZG-OmgZhbcCym3cx
