I started posting on here more regularly earlier this year. During this period, it has seemed that a very light touch is applied to moderation. Has this changed over time? When I look at ancient threads there seem to be plenty of banned users.

I’ve been finding a lot of the recent bickering and personal vendettas quite offputting if I’m being honest. And posters who want no part of such things can end up inadvertently getting caught up in them as I’ve found out.

Moderation is a thankless task, so I’m certainly not going to criticise anyone about it, but I suspect the diversity of any forum ends up being lower where moderation is very light.

I think you mean Trill Ginge B-)
I had two of the little budgers many years back, my mum inherited them when I left home.

I’m fine with the mods being in the background lurking and deleting nasty posts like when Turkoman slated me and my Meydan Thread completely out of the blue,
What I would like to see disappear is the ‘Report’ option..it’s so easy to tap unknowingly when scrolling through posts and I can imagine one of the mods sitting patiently in a little cubicle waiting for a bell to ring or a light to suddenly comes on as someone presses the option.
Actually what does happen at TRF Towers when the ‘Report’ option is pressed..do they know who did it and is a warning sent to the offending TRFer?

I don’t think it serves any other purpose than to wind the original poster up so I would vote for it to go or at least be moved right over to the left of the blue bar away from scrolling fingers. :good: Jac

Great to see a range of views.

Perhaps some of us – me included – would do well to remember that “no reply is a reply.”

It’s very hard for an antagonist to thrive without the oxygen of obtaining reactions.

    @Triptych

“Actually what does happen at TRF Towers when the ‘Report’ option is pressed..do they know who did it and is a warning sent to the offending TRFer?”

I certainly do look at them all.

The majority are where the “poster” has hit the “report” button in error.

It seems at the moment a lot of people are reporting “posts” just for the sake of it to antagonise – I know who you all are!

We only delete or edit posts as a last resort.

I’d say it’s about right as it is. I understand why bigger forums with thousands of posts per day probably need a bit more reigning in but it’s a much smaller group here.

Leave all the nonsense up for posterity I say, and that includes mine.

Most people are just having a pop at each other if they disagree about something. The only person who I’d say was being purposely antagonistic is gamble. He was never like that till Covid struck. It’s caused a lot of division on here and that’s sad.

All talk of the C word would be banned if I was in a position to do so. Plenty of other places to mither about it if that’s how they get their kicks.

“It seems at the moment a lot of people are reporting “posts” just for the sake of it to antagonise – I know who you all are!”

I can only recall pushing the report button when someone calls someone else an obscene name – that crosses a line for me.

Wasted five seconds of my life reporting it, though – the post was left as it was so I just assumed it must be ok here to call each other whatever we like.

In short, be as unspeakably horrible to each other as you like, but woe betide anyone who puts a thread in the wrong folder!

    All good fun, though.

Overall, TRF is better than ever IMO.

I assume it’s a limitation of the software (if that’s the right word, probably not) but does it have to be labelled as reported? Can’t recall seeing such a thing on any other forum.

One of my posts was reported, probably by Tank! And for good reason. It was Covid related matter which I felt quite strongly about, but still I should have express myself better. I since edited the post. I think an unreserved apology is due to Tank for what I put.

I noticed that was reported, Rummy, but I can swear that it wasn’t me. Matron may know who it was

From my perspective I’d say that it is as ‘actively moderated’ as ever but that we probably do have a slightly lighter touch.

I think that is due to a combination of things. In general there are thankfully less reasons for us to get involved and bannings are extremely rare these days as are post deletions. Also, speaking for myself at least, I think experience over the last 15 years has given me a better eye and a better judgement for spotting when to step in and I think probably less eager to pull the trigger than in the early days. In refereeing terms maybe more inclined to let the game flow.

If anyone complains about anything I/we always investigate and generally we know who to keep an eye on.

Anyone who has a specific issue with anything can either report the post (as Matron says they are all looked at) or feel free to mail at david@theracingforum.co.uk

Think I must have reported my own post yesterday.
Wasn’t sure though, did the edit button just not work?
Easily done when the key is so close to the edit button.
Especially those of us who like to use the edit button quite a bit and whose eyesight isn’t what it was and refuse to wear glasses.

I’m sensing a bit of Glasnost on this thread.

Credit to admin for not getting defensive about the subject.

    It’s becoming a feel-good thread for me!

Thanks Matron and David for enlightening me/us on the ‘Report’ option and pleased to hear that you know when it has been activated by mistake as sometimes when I see a reported post on a Thread that I have been scrolling down I wonder if I had hit on it in error.
As most people are right handed could the ‘Report’ option not be moved over to the left of page.
Maybe when the ‘Bold’ makes it’s much anticipated return ‘Report’ could find a new home on the page.
I think generally the Mods and Admin do a good job here and appreciate your honest replies.

Ginge if I didn’t wear my specs I’d be be double ‘reporting’ all over the Forum..😅🤣

I have no problem with the level of moderation on here.

I quite enjoy the bickering, you can’t beat a good “bicker”.

It can get a bit tedious when a couple or three posters try a little intimidation.

Does it put people joining or posting? Could do if you are a “bedwetter” or “tree-hugger” I suppose.

The forum seems relatively healthy at the moment and long may that continue.

P.S…….can’t believe our “shepherd” really wants the Lounge closed dowm.
