Not two names I would ever have expected to link together. However, after the recent thread about Bez from the Happy Mondays starting a racing club, a podcast series about the disappearance of Shergar presented by early 90s rap star Vanilla Ice seems less unlikely that it perhaps would have done previously.

June 7, 2021 at 14:51 #1544231One day we’ll find out that Bob Baffert was responsible for the Amy Winehouse drug abuse….
Now, THAT wouldn’t be too far off.June 7, 2021 at 16:03 #1544239“I believe Ozzy Osbourne is assisting Alice with that one Ian.”
Really?
I’d heard the former Black Sabbath frontman was working on a documentary on the evolving draw bias over sprint distances on all British racecourses – I was obviously told wrong!
Strange but true: I once wrote a feature on him.

Not yet had the pleasure of listening to Vanilla Ice’s contribution, but it’s on the playlist…
June 7, 2021 at 16:34 #1544243Rumour has it the great Mr. Ice is collaberating with a certain party animal Irish veteran trainer, to produce a re-boot of his most famous track. “Ice Ice Bolger” will probably cause SPOTIFY to crash due to demand.
Thanks for that link Ian, I’ll have a read of that later. Are you still a journalist? Interesting job / life I should imagine.

June 7, 2021 at 16:55 #1544246No, I left journalism 20 years ago.
I was actually on the racing desk on The Independent, but it was the eccentric land of opportunity and if you wanted to write a feature on something outside your department, they were usually well up for publishing it.
As well as this, I had an interview with Garry Kasparov and a few more items besides.
Fun days.

Did you open the Kasparov interview with, “Hi Garry, are you a Czech, mate?”. I’ll get my coat.

June 7, 2021 at 17:47 #1544251I had already met him at a Chess tournament, we got along ok – he’s very polite and courteous – and he agreed to an interview.
He just told me his life story and answered a load of questions – mainly about his past matches and future plans.
It’s still out there online on the internet somewhere.

July 1, 2021 at 19:12 #1548667The Shergar podcast I mentioned in this thread has now finished after seven episodes. To give a quick review in case it is of interest to anyone else (probably not!), I enjoyed it. If you already know the story in any degree of detail then I doubt you would gain any new insights, but I didn’t know it that well and found hearing more about this tragic and absurd set of events interesting.
It made a lot of use of archive recordings and I don’t think there was much in the way of original research, with the main aim being to tell a story. Having the aforementioned Mr Ice as the presenter was somewhat of a distraction, especially as the podcast kept reminding you of his presence, but this did settle down a bit after the first episode.
If you are looking for a scholarly investigation or a more sober documentary then it won’t be of interest. However, if you’d like a good overview of what happened and can get past some of the sillier aspects of the presentation it’s a worthwhile listen simply because of what a compelling story it is based on.
