After finishing at the back on saturday and putting in some less then good performance’s at the end of the last flat season, will we see the best of the old boy ever again? saturday was his first run and probably not his best distance but i get the feeling and i hope im wrong that this great horse might of had his day.

April 21, 2008 at 16:32 #159119I thiink he should be retired He’s not good enough over middle distances and dosen’t seem to have it in him anymore for cup trips.
April 21, 2008 at 17:20 #159128Totally agree with you about that.
I can see him going for the Yorkshire Cup at York and if he shows nothing then surley he must be retired and even as a jumps fan i would hate to see him being sent over timber as he owes no one anything.
Possibly the pace in the John Porter was no good for him as the past few runnings have had small fields in it which has meant he could stay on at the end.
Maybe a small listed race could be found for him but i would hate to see if go the same way of old Punchy
April 22, 2008 at 05:38 #159179Apparently he never runs well in his first race of the season, so maybe we just need to watch this space.
April 22, 2008 at 08:07 #159190He’ll go to York for the Yorkshire Cup and after that things will be a bit clearer. He always needs the race first time and, as he gets older, he might need it a little more.
There is more chance of Denman running in the Queen Anne Stakes than there is of Sergeant Cecil going over hurdles. Don’t worry about that.
May 14, 2008 at 11:26 #163383Yeah it’s the Yorkshire cup on friday for Sergeant Cecil, good luck to the old boy.

May 14, 2008 at 12:08 #163393Good luck to him, have enjoyed watching him over the years. He has had a very good career.
May 14, 2008 at 17:25 #163470Harsh, MP.
I spoke to Rod Millman last time I was at Bath and asked him about retirement for Sarge.
He didn’t think that all horses enjoyed retirement and he believes that Sarge would be one of those.
He said he would be going to York for this race and he was expecting a much more respectable run from the horse. Sarge hadn’t enjoyed the run at Newbury at all, whether it was the ground or the fact that he was restrained early on and resented it.

May 14, 2008 at 17:58 #163476Probably just as well they got the book out before his form dipped. Nothing like financial opportunism!
I have got the book.
It is about where the horse has come from, the trainer, etc…
Nothing to do with financial opportunism.
It is a very good book, and a very good read.
May 14, 2008 at 21:49 #163515Stable are going much better now than when he ran at Newbury and hopefully he will put upo a much better show.
Certainly reunited with Alan Munro and on better ground there will be few excuses if he runs well below par again on Friday.May 15, 2008 at 08:36 #163545When you look at how well he maintained his form throughout his career prior to the second half of last year, it has to be a concern that he’s gone. Unsuitable trip and poor stable form aside, his reappearance effort have further credence to that theory.
May 16, 2008 at 13:53 #163903that was his course and distance, what now for Sergeant?

August 1, 2008 at 09:24 #175641A truly admirable racehorse
Northumberland Plate, Ebor, Cesarewitch – one of the most remarkable achievements by any horse under any code anywhere
Be grateful you were around to witness it
August 1, 2008 at 09:54 #175645A long and happy retirement to Sergeant Cecil, a real quality stayer in his day.
August 1, 2008 at 17:01 #175685From decent handicapper to Group One winner.
His unique treble in 2005 will live long in the memory.
I will never forget his finest hour – victory in the 2006 Prix Du Cadran under Frankie Dettori.
Happy Retirement, old lad.
