Well done FLD, what a tough mare.
Great to see the white duke enjoying himself and jumping really well with confidence again, he just wasn’t at himself last year at all jumping out to the right and badly, looked great today :good:

Pretty much a copy of Defi his race in the Champion Chase, disappointing. Riders on the Storm lacking cruising speed and Put the Kettle On perfectly ridden!

As an Altior-loyalist not a bad outcome.

That looked another very muddling race

As useful form wise as the morgiana was

Good performance from PTKO, toughed it out well. Was great to see DDG back to form too and proving his previous Arkle win was no fluke.

DDS needs better ground but Hobbs looks like he’s barely put any pre-training into some of his better ones. Sporting John and Defi barely performed to half of their ability.

DDS isnt a decent ground champ over 2 miles imo. Soft over the distance ideally. 2 and a half miles decent ground perfect. Hobbs horses just arent firing first time it seems. Altior on the hand likes nice ground over 2 miles trainer says.

Defi may simply be done with after watching that performance. Some of his jumping was horrific particularly at the first and fitness wasn’t an issue for that. Happens to some horses, hopefully he will come back but I won’t be betting on that happening. Riders Of The Storm was disappointing and 2m looked far too sharp for him, I wouldn’t write him off over further so interesting to see what he does.
The mare jumped well but hard to know formwise what that was worth and I didn’t think she would get up and collar the Nicholls horse after the last but credit to her as she jumped well and did get up.

Hard to know what to make of that race but the winner should improve for the run so could end up being decent though I would need to see more in a decent race where everything performs. Strange race all in all.

Very pleased with Put The Kettle On although, after her front running performance in the Arkle, I would have liked to have seen her a bit more forward. Would have made it less nerve-wracking.

Not sure what’s up with DDS – he may well not have been as good a horse as people think, but I also suspect he may want further and better ground.

So don't run, just like the others always do

I doubt Defi du Seuil would have won over any distance today, given the way he jumped.

Philip Hobbs said: “Defi du Seuil is perfectly all right. He was travelling well at the top of the hill, but then he just got very tired very quickly and Richard Johnson thought there was no point jumping the last.”

It would be his jumping not his fitness levels that would concern me. Would struggle to pick up a class 5 novice chase the way he jumped yesterday.

Apart from the first fence where he gave it big air and the second last when he was tired, his jumping was ok.

I disagree it’s not only the mistakes he made it was his slowness over the fences even on the clean jumps.
Champion chase horses need to ping them and land running. I can’t see him ending up at the festival next year which is a shame as I like the horse but looks to have totally lost it.

I didnt see the horror jumping show you saw. At one point he had got himself into a share of 2nd before fading. Too early to write off the horse anyway and he has the option of going up in trip. He was last of 5 on his novice chase debut first run of the season, not jumping well, and still won the JLT at the Festival so he has bounced back before.

Hobbs stable isn’t exactly flying and most have needed there first run , I haven’t given up on him yet but I’d be surprised if they went champ chase surely the ryaniair should be the race they go for this time

If Hobbs can’t see now that the Ryanair is the race to aim him for he might aswell hand his license in at the end of the season!

Brilliant from the Mare though…I’d have her as favourite for the Champion Chase now..

Hobbs can, and probably will, run a fitter Defi against Altior in the Tingle Creek to test it all out.
