SAVETHERACINGFORUM
If I could I would TDK. Surely there’s someone out there?
(Edited by FlatSeasonLover at 8:07 pm on July 14, 2006)
July 14, 2006 at 19:04 #96200There has to be a way round this surely? Ive no idea whats involved myself
Could duties be shared?
July 14, 2006 at 19:22 #96201I don’t mind moderating a couple of rooms. I’ve been modding at another forum for a couple of years now, so I know what’s what.
July 14, 2006 at 19:23 #96203The forum is excellent and a testimant to the late and much missed Craig.
It would be great were it to continue, developing but with similar aims and objectives.
Sadly I fear that my IT skills aren’t good enough to take it on.
Is there anyone out there with the skills and time?
July 14, 2006 at 19:41 #96204Agree it must be saved. I would have no objection to a slimmed down version were that to be the way to go.
July 14, 2006 at 19:50 #96205Maybe a team of people could run it. Craig must have put a hell of a lot of time and effort into it and there may not be anyone else with quite his dedication, but if a group could get together, I’m sure it ought to be possible. I do hope so.
July 14, 2006 at 20:27 #96207Keeping TRF going will be hard imo – it will require a lot of hard of work and IT skills, also money
July 14, 2006 at 21:44 #96209The SmartSig forum might be able to help take on TRF duties. It has not got properly restarted since last autumn.
July 15, 2006 at 00:18 #96211I can host the site although I’d need to check how much traffic the site gets to see if I’d need to upgrade my leased server.
I can, probably over the course of a month or so, with a little help from Debs work out what needs to be done to transfer to a new server and upgrade the forum software.
I can’t moderate as I just don’t have enough time to check in constantly, and I certainly don’t have the patience to listen to disputes and tantrums, but we could easily nominate a group of trusted members like some other sites do. There is a strong possibility that the site could well lose some of its unique flavour if it were moderated by commitee though.
Also, someone would have to manage the paper based join-up system – another feature of the site that makes it so unique (filters out a lot of trolls and prevents spambots), or we’d have to forgoe that an switch to a traditional sign up system (yerk).
July 15, 2006 at 00:28 #96212I should be able to some moderating if necessary (and people are ok with it).
July 15, 2006 at 00:47 #96215I think Rich has hit it on the head, it is a big job and a testament to what it has been so far. From my experience in IT split duties are very difficult to manage successfully. It will need a single dedicated owner and people who can be there more or less 24/7. I don’t know if partial or shared modding would work, but it may do with some degradation. I wish I had the time but it’s not just the time, it’s who does it when you’re not there. This is a big ask and requires somebody, imo, who has every day spare. I do hope it continues but if not, it has been good. Fingers crossed. Thinking outside the box, would members be prepared to pay someone (definitely not me or anyone I know, sort it out yourselves) to host and moderate according to whatever SLAs are set down ? There are probably other options that I am too drunk to consider.
July 15, 2006 at 00:52 #96216Edit – got rid of this post because it was a daft post about some techy thing about Ikonboard, the forum software, that was going through my head.
For those who did read the post and can’t bear the tension, I’m told it is possible to move from 2.1 to 3.x :)
Must go to bed.

July 15, 2006 at 08:36 #96219Willing to do my bit (whatever that might be). It’s important not just to save the site, but to preserve the TRF legacy. I know that’s what James is talking about, and that’s something I also feel strongly about.
July 15, 2006 at 09:43 #96222i’d be happy for either a one-off or regular payment if it keeps things going. we’re all probably interested in racing and gamblers anyway so what’s a few quid every now and then ? just take it from your winnings ;)
July 15, 2006 at 10:56 #96224Ditto to Mr Berry’s post.
I’m willing to pay for something I enjoy. I wish I could help in the ICT aspect, but I’m afraid that I have planktonian computer skills. Wouldn’t be much practical help, I’m afraid.
July 15, 2006 at 11:48 #96225The server I have in mind (which is being paid for already so won’t cost anything as long as my business survives) has about 15Gb of spare hard disk (guess that must be plenty), and an available bandwidth of about 100Gb/month.
I’ve no idea what the site currently uses, but that sounds like enough.
My worry would be that the server doesn’t have a very powerful CPU and the site could run slow. Also the server would be shared (albeit infrequently) by software developers who will upload and download their code a couple of times a week – this could cause slowdowns, but I’ve no idea of knowing how much.
If we went ahead, I guess the best thing to do is to try it, and accept that we might see a slower site in the short term. If the performance is unnacceptable over the first month, then we can look at upgrade options.
If I were a betting man, I’d guess that there’ll be no noticeable difference in performance (I assume that at the moment the site is hosted on a server shared with dozens of other sites anyway).
July 15, 2006 at 12:26 #96227TRF is by some way the best public racing/betting forum I’m aware of both in content and regular flow of traffic. I would be quite happy to pay a fee to help a new administrator get TRF2 up and going though any thought of an annual sub would be self-defeating IMO as it would deter fresh blood. Such forums have a habit of becoming stultifyingly cliquey with just a handful of regular posters regurgitating the same old subjects. The broadest of churches is required.
To ease the workload I’d agree with davidjohnson’s idea of a slimmed down version if need be. Personally I only read ‘Horse Racing’ and ‘Lounge’ anyway.
