DIRECTOR OF RACINGOkay, these are the weights. I suppose the next thing is to find the form. Any suggestions of websites appreciated. I’ll start off with the RP site, then the Santa Anita site, and then take a gander at the thorograph charts via the betfair site.

Champs Elysees was given too much to do last year. Can he win if ridden differently?
March 2, 2009 at 04:24 #212995On face value, I’m happy to play Tiago. He is improving gradually and proved in the Classic he is one of the standout horses of that division.
March 2, 2009 at 07:44 #213016March 3, 2009 at 03:47 #213168Okay, I’ve been trying to ignore this race until the final deccies, or whatever they’re called in America. Got a bit bored, so have had a quick look at the top 7. Tiago obviously, Myles. I also like Colonel John – always runs well at SA, but is having to giving Tiago 1lb. He won both the Sham Stakes and Santa Anita Derby at this time last year, so is likely to come to hand?
I suppose so far, we’re just stating the bleeding obvious.
I am rather hoping Thorograph make this their Race of the Week, so that we can look at the Sheets for free. Haven’t used Sheets before, but have read about them in a couple of Beyer’s books.
March 3, 2009 at 04:19 #213174I’m really looking forward to this. Santa Anita is a big thing for me on a Saturday night and this will just top off what is an exciting multi-national racing weekend what with the Australian Cup also being this weekend.
Colonel John is a personal favourite of mine and with him seemingly being preferred for this rather than Dubai is a major plus in my book. Did I read somewhere that he MAY miss this through injury though? I hope not. This is the right distance for Colonel John after he disappointed at shorter last time out.
Mast Track never quite seems to be good enough for me and whilst Tiago was 3rd here in the Breeders Cup the last run didnt do much for me
From a British point of view I’ll be having a tiny EW on Dansant. A combination of British performances over the Breeders Cup and Dansants decent AW form over here would make me gutted if he did hack up and considering he’s likely to be big prices I cant help but nibble on that.
However, my biggest fancy for this is Cowboy Cal. If Garratt Gomez does get the leg up for this then in my opinion thats a major plus point for this one and of course a negative for the Frankel runners (I await comments telling me i’m stupid for saying this, they will come I’m sure).
Cowboy Cal loves it around Santa Anita and performed extremley well last time out off top weight and from a difficult draw in a similar size field.
Of the outsiders, dont write off Magnum. Performed well last time out here in front of Well Armed (who i really rate), Champs Elyesses and Tiago and cant be forgotten here. The weights would suggest that Magnum should be able to very narrowly hold off Tiago too
March 3, 2009 at 04:42 #213177I doubt they’ll be anyone to tell you you’re stupid, Halfway – looks like the contributors will be you, me, Myles, IS and YP, and I’m popping my cherry with this race.
March 3, 2009 at 05:26 #213184Colonel John is over-rated. Was my top-rater for the Kentucky Derby, and I don’t think he’s lived up to the hyped potential.
Some of these might have a chance if they peak early in the season. The campaign patterns will be interesting.
March 3, 2009 at 19:31 #213258Will post my thoughts later – disappointed that The Z Monster isn’t nominated though
March 3, 2009 at 20:03 #213269Erm, Martin, a filly against colts and horses at this time of year?
Myles makes an interesting point about how these horses will be campaigned. If the older horses follow the French and Australian pattern of having a Spring and an Autumn campaign, and the the 3yos will be buggered by taking part in the Kentucky Derby Trial, who usually contends the big US races in June, July and August? The rest of the World is lucky that they’ve got Royal Ascot, the July meeting, Glorious Goodwood, Galway! and the August meeting (recently renamed the Ebor meeting) to watch. Okay, USA has got Saratoga and France has got Deauville in August, but that is mainly 2yos and sprinter-milers.
March 3, 2009 at 20:30 #2132795yo Mare against older colts – if she’s good enough then I see no reason not to other than races like the Santa Margarita etc diverting their attentions elsewhere.
March 4, 2009 at 01:54 #213315The exspected big cap weights and riders
Blue Exit, Robbie Albarado, 115;
Cause, Jon Court, 110;
Champs Elysees, Jose Valdivia Jr., 118; ran a howler last time out, needs further, but given a more posative ride he looks a safer bet than his errant nephew and stable companion. His brother Dansii is the sire of two runners, i wonder how many horses run against their uncles…
Colonel John, Garrett Gomez, 119; Ran over a trip too short for him, given a stronger pace he should come fast and late. The stable look too be in form, his full brother, Mr Hot Stuff ran well the other day…
Court Vision, Ramon Dominguez, 119; A horse who I have allot of time for, grade two winner on the dirt as a juvinile, ran in maiden company on the alweather, and a grade one turf winner with a lethal late kick, he ran a good race against older horses over a less than Ideal trip at Gulfstream, Billy Mott wouldnt bring him hear for a suntan. He is what every owner wants a horse who can run over practically any thing and stand a prolonged campagned at the big dances.
Cowboy Cal, John Velazquez, 120; Useful on turf and alweather, vunerable too a late finnisher and can see him being taken down late in the day by the closers.
Dansant, Tyler Baze, 116; classy on the alweather at home, the trips on the sharp side, i wonder if he is punching above his weight in this company.
Einstein, Julien Leparoux, 121; Keeping the Brigader Gerad dream alive so many years later, this horse runs turf and dirt with equal effeceny, he will go close, the only worry is that this is his first run in grade one company over this surface.
Heroi Do Bafra, Martin Garcia, 111;
Magnum, Joel Rosario, 116;
Matto Mondo, Rafael Bejarano, 116;
Monba, Edgar Prado, 114;
Monba won the Blue Grass stakes at Keenland beating Cowboy Cal
Nownownow, Alex Solis, 116; was given a through drubbing in Europe last spring, a graded stakes winner on the alweather, but I doubt he will trouble the judge.
Tiago, Mike Smith, 118; Loves this place, he doesnt win often, but he gunned down Curlin in the BC classic for third against two very clasy euro milers off a slow pace, he got allot of stick in the past, he on his day he is a useful horse who runs honestly.
Zambezi Sun, Victor Espinoza, 116. A little ****, a talented, but a little **** non the less, pulled like a train and cornered like a learner driver last time out,could be anailed on winner or a complent pig, who knows.I am going too take Einstein for the win with place bets on Monba and Court Vison.
If this lot show up it should be one of the most competative renewls for donkeys years.
March 4, 2009 at 05:16 #213353Gomez goes for Colonel John? Colonel John thrived under Gomez in the Travers Stakes last year.
I’m not sure what to make of that pick for Cowboy Cal/Zambezi Sun’s chances though…Gives out mixed signals. Zambezi Sun has been completley forgotten for this possibly because of the below par run last time out.
If Zambezi Sun doesnt pull hard he SHOULD have a cracking chance.
March 5, 2009 at 10:08 #213504From the Santa Anita website:
Santa Anita oddsmaker Jeff Tufts views this Big ‘Cap as being so densely competitive that his morning line favorite is Colonel John at 9-2 with four others listed no higher than 6-1.
The complete field for the Santa Anita Handicap, with jockeys, weights and morning line odds in post position order:
Matto Mondo, Rafael Bejarano, 116, 6-1;
Cowboy Cal, John Velazquez, 120, 5-1;
Heroi Do Bafra, Michael Baze, 111, 30-1;
Monba, Edgar Prado, 114, 15-1;
Colonel John, Garrett Gomez, 119, 9-2;
Magnum, Joel Rosario, 116, 12-1;
Blue Exit, Robby Albarado, 115, 12-1;
Einstein, Julien Leparoux, 121, 6-1;
Dansant, Tyler Baze, 116, 20-1;
Cause, Jon Court, 110, 30-1;
Court Vision, Ramon Dominguez, 119, 6-1;
Zambezi Sun, Victor Espinoza, 116, 12-1;
Champs Elysees, Jose Valdivia, Jr., 118, 12-1,
and Stream Cat, Alex Solis, 114, 20-1.Tiago is off his tucker.
Stardom Bound is running in the Santa Anita Oaks, same day.

Don’t change it though, because that is still useful and interesting anyway. Can’t believe that O’Neill provides a daily Joke of the Day – some of them must be dire, surely?
March 6, 2009 at 05:59 #213765Thanks Dell – I’m still reading your forum buddy!
Tiago really has turned a corner for mine, so I’m disappointed he has "turned" the past few days.
Zambezi Sun has to learn a few things first. Champs Elysees looks like a Marathon contender.
Might predict a slower tempo and something on the bunny snatches a break on the straight?
Look forward to Stardom Bound. The Breeders’ Cup main event will not be the Classic this year. It’s Personal Ensign vs. Winning Colors all over again! Zenyatta vs. Stardom Bound.
