Gaz, you can’t say that Voy Por Ustedes won’t meet My Way De Solzen and then declare that the former’s targets hinge upon his performance in the King George.
Do you know what the intended targets are for each horse, or is it simply the case that My Way De Solzen will run wherever Voy Por Ustedes doesn’t (thus making MWDS’s season very much dependent on VPU’s)?
November 4, 2008 at 12:56 #187892Gaz,Far be it for me to tell you, but my feeling is that Voy por will run in the Ryanair and thats what puts me off backing My way de solzen for the race! i am sure Voy por wont run over 2m again! an easy 3m round kempton is very similar to the tough 21/2m of the Ryanair!
Yes, that is where i would see the horse running at Cheltenham, i think he would win the Ryanair to be honest.

I can say that, because that is exactly what the situation is.
The plan is that Voy Por will be running over longer distances than My Way, so the chances that they will meet if all goes to the plan, is minimal. It will only be if things dont go to plan, that they will meet, which im sure Mr King will want to avoid anyway.
November 4, 2008 at 14:17 #187897A Champion Chase winner being campaigned over further than a Stayers Hurdle winner! Strange riddles indeed for Mr. King to work out.

My Way doesnt have the stamina anymore for staying hurdle-type distances. On the other hand, Voy Por maybe doesnt possess the pace he once had, and therefore is being stepped up in trip.
My Way is crying out for a drop back in trip, and this is what he will get.
November 4, 2008 at 14:36 #187905Gaz – just so i have this right in my head…. are you saying that MWDS and /or VPU will beat Tidal Bay over 2m4f? If you are I’d suggest that your need to change from Blinkers to a Noseband.

No im not, i think Tidal Bay will do very well this year, we dont know where My Way will go first now, after Christmas, whether it will be 2 miles or 2 miles 4, he was meant to be running today at Exeter but he wont be, so we will have to wait a little while on that one.
Would be an interesting race between Voy Por and Tidal Bay though if they did meet in the Ryanair.
November 4, 2008 at 15:57 #187917Sorry Gaz – but the only way that VPU will get close to Tidal Bay at the Ryan Air will require the use of a Tow Rope!
November 4, 2008 at 19:33 #187956I would agree but he has to run the horse somewhere.
Taking on Kauto Star isn’t my idea of fun for the horse but he did win well at Aintree albeit against a horse who stopped like he was dead. I can’t believe he is second favourite at 7/2-4/1 one of the most ridiculous prices I have seen in years. Can’t even be sure he will get the trip let alone win. I mean to say..is this the same QMCC winner VPU that Kauto Star murdered in the Tingle Creek?
If he is all Kauto has to beat that 6/4 I took must be the bet of the centuary.
He is entitled to take on Tidal Bay in the Ryanair that is if Tidal Bay runs in the Ryanair. If Tidal Bay were to beat Master Minded in the Tingle Creek you can forget the Ryanair for him.
I don’t see any mention of Noland who is probably much better suited by 2m4f as he is 2miles.
There’s alot of ifs and buts about the Ryanair and it’s one dodgy race to be betting in at this stage.
November 4, 2008 at 20:57 #187980In my opinion the Rynair is for horses who are not quite good enough to have a realistic chance of winning a CC or CGC. I personally objected strongly when it was elevated to Grade 1 status, and i think the winners to date (Fondmort, Thisthatandtother, Taranis, Our Vic) tend to lend to my point of view.
For this reason i would agree its very trappy to be trying to figure this race now, if for example Tidal Bay loses narrowly in the KG surely he will aim at the CGC?
AS the Rynair is now a Grade 1, and the unbeatable looking jollys in the flagship events (Masterminded + Kauto / Denman) i can see the QMCC and the CGC cutting up badly and the Rynair having a large field.
November 4, 2008 at 21:19 #187982I doubt that the Ryanair’s detractors would take such a dim view of the race had it been a Grade 1 in One Man/Florida Pearl/Wayward Lad’s day.
November 4, 2008 at 22:34 #187996Maybe in their quest to have a million races run at the Cheltenham Festival, the powers that be could run a race for former top class horses who have now lost the plot and are now running at least a stone below their best form
The Field
My Way de Solzen
Kicking King
Black Jack Ketchum
Lough Derg
Contraband (if he’s not already running in the Gold Cup, Champion Chase, Ryanair, & Grand National)November 5, 2008 at 00:53 #188019GAZ, I know you are obviously very well connected to Alan Kings yard, but
my humble opinion is that My way de solzen will be running in the Peterborough chase over an ideal 21/2m trip this side of xmas! Why are you so convinced he wont run this side of xmas?November 5, 2008 at 01:20 #188027Gaz – just so i have this right in my head…. are you saying that MWDS and /or VPU will beat Tidal Bay over 2m4f? No reason IMO not to expect Voy Por Ustedes couldnt beat Tidal Bay at 2m4f. A MWDS at his best would definitely give him a hell of a race too.
Tidal Bay is a good horse but people talk about him beating better horses like its a foregone conclusion. IMO Voy Por Ustedes beating masterminded at aintree is the best piece of form that would be on offer in such a contest although he is usually a horse for later in the season.
November 5, 2008 at 03:22 #188059All i will say is wait and see in regards to Voy Por Ustedes.
The horse has been written off all the time, but he is a really good horse and a lovely lad too, and looks very, very up for it this season.
I agree with Bulwark that it wouldn’t be a walk in the park for Tidal Bay, far from it, especially if Voy Por got Tidal Bay under pressure, his jumping wasnt the best at Doncaster when he got beaten by Leslingtaylor when he was under pressure.

On Voy Por Ustedes’s defeat of Master Minded you would have to think that he’d have every chance of beating Tidal Bay, but it’s still not clear whether the Nicholls horse a) ran to form at Aintree, and b) hits a brick wall at some point between 16 and 20 furlongs. My guess would be that Master Minded was over the top following his exertions at Cheltenham and simply ran well below his best at Liverpool, thus making any literal interpretation of Voy Por Ustedes’s victory potentially misleading.
It seems to me that, whilst Alan King has an idea of what he’d like to do, there is actually no set plan for the horse other than that Master Minded must be avoided at all costs (were they to meet again at Aintree, you’d have to think that Nicholls would be going in the knowledge that last season’s form could be reversed). Suggestions on this thread have already gone from ‘we know exactly what will happen’ to ‘we know what we want to happen, but it’s dependent on one particular run’, and I wonder how long it will take to descend to a simple ‘we have no idea’.
Either way, Master Minded and Tidal Bay are set to dominate.

Tidal Bay’s jumping has greatly improved since.
Those mistakes would’ve put even the most seasoned veteran on the floor. Not only did he stay on his feet, he nearly recovered to beat a former Swinton Hurdle winner.
Denis O’Regan was sublime on him at Cheltenham and the horse benefitted from the education and his jumping has improved since.
He has his own way of jumping, but he’s never looked like falling and I think it would take a massive blunder to put him on the floor. He’s so strong and an incredible athlete.
I’ve always been a fan of VPU, but he would need to be at his very, very best to defeat Tidal Bay. The same applies to any top class horse who collides with him.
November 6, 2008 at 21:50 #188411I thought Tidal Bays run at Aintree was really eye catching, cause as he was aimed for Cheltenham to keep him going for the Aintree race where he clouted a couple of fences fairly hard still won and as a novice to boot, is he deffo being amied at the Rynair? cause he seems to be far to good for that race??
really looking forward to see him this season
