From RP
GRAND NATIONAL-winning rider Ryan Mania has sensationally quit riding just 18 months after taking racing’s most famous race due to weight issues.
Mania, 25, has retired with immediate effect saying that the sacrifices of maintaining a riding weight along with travelling and time away from his family had become too much.
Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Mania said: "I’ve been thinking about this since the summer and I always thought that it was going to be my last season.
"Of course I am sad that I am stopping, but it has been at the back of my mind for some time."

November 25, 2014 at 21:34 #496455something of a handicap for my Fantasy Stable! Glad he’s retired in one piece though and I wish him well
November 25, 2014 at 21:52 #496458I’m shocked at that. I didn’t know he had weight issues and he had a really good job at the Smiths.
All the best in whatever you do Ryan and you’ll always have that Saturday in April 2013.
November 26, 2014 at 19:13 #496505He rode the winner of the National last year which may run in it again next year? Another possible big payday less than 6 months away. Seems an odd time to retire. Am I missing something?
November 26, 2014 at 20:31 #496508Won the National on a Saturday, taken away by ambulance on a Sunday, sums up the game and he will always have the National memories to treasure. Good luck to him in whatever he chooses to do in the future.
November 26, 2014 at 21:25 #496510Don’t think Auroras Encore will be racing again will he?
November 26, 2014 at 22:21 #496518Too sensible to remain a jockey
November 26, 2014 at 22:42 #496520You’re not missing anything. Ryan has been quite open about the various reasons for quitting which include weight issues, travelling, poor prize money and most importantly a lack of enthusiasm. Many jockeys in the past have just known when it was time to pack it in and Ryan is the latest.
October 26, 2019 at 00:24 #1472795Good to see him returning to the saddle next week, having got his licence back yesterday.
Plans to return at Ayr on Monday.
