Well done to RUK for a subtle change to their coverage at Newbury today in letting us have the comments of the commentator when the horses are going to the post. Better than having the experts rambling on giving us the comments from the paper.

Yes, I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t initiated by Richard Hoiles, wouldn’t expect it to be done by some commentators

Not my idea but pleased it was well received in some quarters.

Later on it was clashing with Chester but next time I am in the office I will pass on your views.

What was the ground like there today Richard? I was surprised at the low going stick reading of only 7.0

Looked genuinely good to firm with times seeming to say it was at least that.
Wind was across as well and not behind so not wind assisted on straight course.

Associate of mine who walked the course reckoned there were false patches in places, though not in the home straight.

That might be a reason for the extended distances. Like Ascot and York were running good times but finishing well strung out so possibly ground was a bit ‘shifty’ in places.
It was underwater just a few weeks ago which again would fit.

I walked the home straight and it was genuine good to firm and consistent. I think the extended distances were in the main due to some potentially very smart colts running against some poor maidens.
There were four very nice 2-y-o colts winning there, I wouldn’t like to price up a race if they all met over 7f next out.
