Is there a reason why reserves can’t be active until 10am the morning of the race?

Perhaps something to do with betting markets, but someone with a better explanation will chime in.
Personally I agree with the 10am idea especially with the number of runners now involved.

More to do with getting the info into the racecard I suspect. Even at ordinary meetings these days, non runners declared the morning before a race are shown as such in the printed racecard.

The betting industry manages OK with reserves on a regular basis in Ireland – and over here there are reserves in the Shergar Cup races that are paid to be at Ascot and can replace non runners up to an hour before racing.

Of course reserves should be allowed on the day.

But racing will continue to cater for the lowest common denominator and they will say that it “too confusing” for once-a-year-grandad who wants his annual 20p bet on the race.

There has to be a cut off point.
With so many runners it takes far longer to study the race to produce a 100% book, so that I can come to a well informed opinion of what chance each horse has. Reserves wouldn’t make that much difference if they had little chance of winning; but if one or two had a good chance (maybe even a favourite’s chance replacing an outsider) then that would alter the chance of the horses I’ve already backed… To such an extent the bet/s I’ve had may no longer be good bets.
