Take a bow, Greg Fairley, apprentice champion elect…..
"Hopefully William will get a fair whack at Shaftesbury Avenue, and then I’ll be able to take full advantage, but I’m going to take it as it comes and just keep riding as well as I can."
Nice one, son.

Not really nice is it WW
What is nice about hoping a fellow jockey gets a lengthy ban? What could he possibly take from winning the Apprentice title because his main rival wasn’t able to race.
I haven’t seen or read the interview you are referring to, and perhaps Greg said it tongue in cheek, but if he didn’t, then it’s not very sporting to hope that your main rival gets a ban, meaning you can win the title without being pushed.
No doubt that Greg is delighted that the Mark Johnson stable jockey is out injured, giving him this opportunity to ride in more races and bag more winners.
Honest he may be, but whether or nor it is welcomed honesty is debatable in my opinion.
I think Liam Jones will have an important say also, and he isn’t injured or banned I don’t think.

September 27, 2007 at 10:17 #116697There was quote on Radio 5 this morning from one of the centre-backs of a losing side last night, can’t remember which one, " I contributed nothing to the team, I played like a pub-team player"
Perhaps this honesty is catching, let’s hope it spreads to the politicians and Racing Post reporters.
Tell it like it is, lads!!!!

September 27, 2007 at 10:24 #116698Mikky, what planet do you live on?
Everyone and anyone who runs the selfish gamut of human emotion (maybe you’re a saint Mikky, I don’t know) would, in Greg’s situation, be hoping for Buick to get a massive ban and have him put out of the race – however, very few would have the candour to say so to a RP reporter, they would just mouth the usual platitudes. As he gets older, Greg will learn to do the same, as will the Aston Villa defender Colin is referring to, but in the meantime, I celebrate their youthful ingenuousness.

Fair enough WW, this is just your opinion, and I have had my opinion – please don’t revert to "what planet do you live on" everytime I have a different opinion to you.
To hope a fellow jockey gets a lengthy ban is not very sporting in my opinion, and I stand by it. Please respect my opinion, just as I have, and value yours.

September 27, 2007 at 10:32 #116701"Owww, look at me, Marge, I’m making people happy! I’m the magical man, from Happy Land, who lives in a gumdrop house on Lolly Pop Lane! . . . By the way I was being sarcastic."
with apologies to H. Simpson.
September 27, 2007 at 10:53 #116708Is the "fair whack" quote being taken out of context I wonder ?
Maybe he’s merely hoping that Buick gets a fair hearing ?
September 27, 2007 at 10:57 #116709It’s H.J. Simpson actually!
September 27, 2007 at 12:29 #116729Id hope he would get a lengthy ban too if I was wanting to win, i hope all the others players in the premiership get injured before Saturday so I can go up my fantasy football table, nothing wrong in a bit of competition as long as you win in the end, none of this liberal lets be equal and fair nonsense winnings what counts.

As a matter of academic interest, do you cheer when the other horse takes a fall, to your ultimate advantage?

September 27, 2007 at 12:46 #116734If what he said was not taken out of context – karma will strike, it always does You have to be very careful about things like that…. you do really.

Depends if its injured or not obviously nobody wants to see a horse get any sort of injury or worse a fatal fall, if the horse is ok and my horse goes on to take advantage then why shouldnt i be pleased.

I totally agree with you Steve, and I totally agree with what WW said about us wanting the opposition to fail.
But it’s one thing thinking it, and another thing saying it.
Of course the reserve striker wants the first choice striker to get injured or suspended. Of course the joint leader of a golf tournament wants the other joint leader to make a mess of the last hole – we all think like that and probably wouldn’t be human if we didn’t. But to say it publicly is disrespectful and unsporting in my opinion – that’s all I am saying.
If Seb Sanders came out and said (and meant it) that he hoped Jamie Spencer would get a lenghty ban so that he could win the jockey’s title there would probably be uproar – rather than being acclaimed as ‘refreshingly honest’ – honest yes, but what would be refreshing about it?

September 27, 2007 at 13:29 #116741Surely it gives more satisfaction to win on one’s own merits, rather than winning because your closest competitor is hampered?
His comments might be honest, but they betray a lack of fight and confidence.
September 27, 2007 at 14:02 #116743I’m sure it does Sal – but I’m not sure that losing on one’s merits gives quite the same satisfaction
At the end of the day, the record books will show that jockey XYZ won the championship in that year.
If a football team has a player rightly sent off in a match, does that detract from the winning team.
And hoping a competitor gets a ban for breaking the rules is very different from hoping that they become injured and cannot compete with you.
September 27, 2007 at 16:01 #116751got what he wanted then, once he’s secured the title it’d be nice to see his refreshing honesty continue and him say perhaps ‘of course i only won it by default as the main contender got banned, morally i’m a loser’
September 27, 2007 at 16:40 #116757………..but the main contender got banned because he broke the rules, would it be right to win a title by breaking the rules?
