Two good books that cover the basics of reading form are:

Betting For A Living: Nick Mordin

    Value Betting: Mark Coton

Very good books indeed Pegwell Bay but for a young chap just starting out (after all he is only 16 yrs old) can you suggest something easy and suitable for a rookie.

Personally, I found Nick Mordin’s book "Betting For A Living" worthless.

If you want to know how experts work "form" out; then buy the Timeform Perspective; folder with A4 sheets of results coming 4 times a week (or Computer Timeform). Get it for a few months and compare what you see with what they write. Even if you don’t keep using it, will give you experience, to know what to look for in "form" study.

If going down this route, you could look on e-bay for a small book called "Betting The Timeform Way".

With Timeform, you don’t have to "rate" the horses ability yourself because they do it for you.

However, it’s not about backing the horse with the best chance of winning; working out the value bet is essential for profit making.

There is one secret to reading form, Mr Wilson – don’t bother on bank holidays as betting becomes a mere lottery.

Today we’ve had an eight-length, Evans-trained seller winner, with very little form and plenty of money behind it; a Holland-ridden, Noseda-trained hot-pot given very little encouragement behind a Mark Johnston newcomer backed from 7/1 in to 9/2 in just a couple of minutes pre-race; and an uneasy Willie Muir favourite hammered at Epsom, with Ted Durcan doing next to nothing in the saddle despite having the race run to suit.

And that was in the first hour of racing.

I’ve only backed one horse today – Cool Strike at Epsom – but get the feeling the once-or-twice-a-year racegoers would have been better off letting Frank Abagnale glance at their cheque book.

Those at long odds will win their fair share of races.

Just because a horse is backed, does not mean any foul play. Got to accept those in the know will have a betting coup now and again. Good luck to them.

Fred Willetts was hardly that much of a surprise, surely? He didn’t have much to find at the weights, was dropped in class, had blinkers on and David Evans told ATR viewers that he was his best chance of the day.

got no chance on here !! Although is a racing forum very little seems to be know by the majority , if they do know ,not much comes fourth unless they can get involved in a slagging match about tv presenters. :?

Four years late, I know, but plenty of my choices ‘come fourth’. :(

It’s impossible to succeed by studying form which is all about comparing like with like. It can only work if every horse in every race is trying, most sensible people know that isn’t the case. I advise you not to bet a penny until you have experienced the reality of finding the best animals via your form books only to see them trounced by unconsidered rivals bolting home.

To find winners you need information from within racing. Buying a racehorse is another method.

The trouble with ‘form’ is that everyone is at it.

OMG, not this old chestnut yet again Woolfie  . How many more times?

Although there are some non-tryers (true number exaggerated by losing punters blaming others for their own inadequacies)… Those that appear

    "Unconsidered rivals"

actually win the amount of races their odds entitle them to. Just as those that appear

    "best animals on form"

lose the amount their odds entitle them to.

    Making a profit is

    not

about backing what you consider the

    "best animal on form"

    is… It

    is

    about backing the horse/s

    you believe

are at better odds than they should be. Any particular selection could be the

    "best animal"

, or could be the (what you’d call)

    "unconsidered rival"

, or anything in between – as long as the punter believes it a better price than it should be.

Whichever selection method a punter decides on – he/she will only profit if good at identifying horses under-played by the market. Some punters are unable to identify this no matter how much they study… so however well they might know the form book – are unable to show an over all profit.

On the subject of Timeform have just had an email from them to say I have won the top prize of a copy of Chasers and Hurdlers Annual and Horses to follow in the weekly ATR Monday competition so quite chuffed. Haven’t had one of the annuals for a few years so looking forward to it arriving.

Absolutely. Ginge, he just makes troll comments to get a reaction. Nobody bothers to reply to him nowadays. Just ignore him and he’ll go away.

Nice one Ken! Haven’t had one of them for years either so might fork out at some point. Was it a tipping competition?

No. You simply had to name Timeform’s top rated flat horse. They do the comp every Monday. Only my second go. I was just first out of the hat so purely luck. Well worth entering with the prizes they offer.
