No one under the age of (insert whatever Richard’s age is – apologies, Richard, I use you as a barometer of the minimum age for total maturity, it’s intended as a compliment) ever uses the word “literally” in its correct context.
Example –
Person Richard’s age or older: “How long will you be?”
Person younger than Richard: “I’ll be literally two seconds.”
Person Richard’s age or older: “One….two. However long you will be, it won’t be literally two seconds because you’ve literally just had two seconds and you’re not here, so how long will you actually be?”
You sure about that, Ian!

Two seconds could mean, second of January, second of February for example. (Just saying)

You've got to accentuate the positive.
Eliminate the negative.
Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.August 9, 2023 at 19:01 #1659245You’re belatedly commenting upon a post that’s nearly a week old, Neil.
No one could ever accuse you of saying: “I’ll be literally two seconds.”

Don't mess with mister in between.August 31, 2023 at 22:09 #1661649Sports commentators who say ‘you couldn’t write a script like this’.
Yes, you could. It really wouldn’t be hard.
September 3, 2023 at 08:43 #1661816Another one that really irritates me – using the phrase “my bad” to indicate you have made a mistake.
September 3, 2023 at 11:20 #1661817Any fairly decent horse or sportsperson (or any celeb or moderately well known thing) being described, or “hailed” as the racing press would have it, as an icon, legend or somesuch. General overhype:
September 6, 2023 at 14:30 #1662026Yes, it’s warm and sunny in September. I do not need to hear about how it’s an ‘Indian Summer’.
September 6, 2023 at 14:58 #1662027I like the expression, Richard, but only because it reminds me of that magnificent grey filly of the 80s…
September 6, 2023 at 16:44 #1662031Great clip, Glad. I was at Newmarket that day. Indian Skimmer was a great favourite. I missed the previous race just to ensure I got a seat by the paddock so I could see her properly.
I had almost forgotten about Percy’s Lass. She really did become a madam!
It was nice to see the old style coverage at the Rowley Mile which showed the horses pulling up. I always like seeing the horses framed against the sky, just like how Stubbs had painted them two centuries before. Now the coverage is either straight to a replay or on RTV it is straight off to show a maiden from Naas.
September 12, 2023 at 16:43 #1662758Rachel Casey on RTV has just described Laytown as “very unique”. How dare she!

He offered to give the man some money but he declined and said, “pay it forward”, I presume this means do the same for someone else, but it’s a new one to me.

A lovely concept I think. Good to know that there are people out there who simply wish to help others out of the goodness of their hearts.

The more I know the less I understand.
September 24, 2023 at 22:32 #1664388If I had a pint of Guinness for every time I heard the words ‘statement win’ before, during and after the Ireland vs South Africa rugby match, I’d be drunk for a week.
They are professional sportsmen, winning is quite literally their job. They do not do it to make a ‘statement’.
September 25, 2023 at 09:09 #1664449Seven minutes into the new working week and I have already had a colleague saying they will “touch base” with me later.
Idiot.
