Tactically irreleavnt? How? It was an immensely tactical race.
You’ve made many interesting posts but seem to be quite bitter for some reason towards looking at this race objectively and taking the benefit and enjoyment of the re-staging of it everyone else has.
December 21, 2008 at 01:08 #198335Marb,
One small difference … Haydock was a nothing race against poor horses. Today was against high class horses rated somwehre around the 155-160 mark.
December 21, 2008 at 01:15 #198337I think Celestial Halo has probably run between 155-160. Katchit, Chomba Womba and CAJ I all have in my mind as 155 animals so I, on first glance, find the form very sound.
December 21, 2008 at 01:18 #198339Paul,
With respect, if you think that race was irrelevant to the Champion Hurdle, I suggest you take stock of your knowledge of racing.
It showed Binocular to be the horse many hoped him to be; Katchit as (imo) a spent force; Celestial Halo a possible force at 2m on a stiff track; Chomba Womba not good enough; and Crackawayjack an overrated entity.
It’s quite a miserable position to take after such a wonderful race and sight.
Why would you not want to see a race like that?
Well done to all for saving the race
Dare I suggest you are contradicting yourself – on the one hand you are saying “it showed Binocular to be the horse many hoped him to be”
Yet you then immediately go on to knock three of the other contenders, the implication of what you say is the only horse of note he beat was the outsider. So what does that prove in relation to Binocular?
Yes he may be an exceptional horse but todays race proves nothing and certainly showed me nothing to entice me to back him at 6/4 for the CH three months ahead of the race. Indeed at that price and this far ahead I am seriously tempted to lay him at that price.
At the risk of repeating myself the configuration Ascot cannot be compared with Cheltenham and the tactics and pace of a five runner race in the good to soft cannot be compared with a larger field on probably good ground at Cheltenham.
Racing is, of course, a matter of opinion – I have mine others may disagree.
Let me ask you a question – if Binocular performed as well as you think then I presume you would think the 6/4 to be generous. Are you now on at that price?

Bitter is a somewhat strong interpretation – I make no secret of the fact I think the race should not have been re-scheduled.
However I never, ever allow emotion to become involved when watching or evaluating a race.
December 21, 2008 at 01:28 #198350I think this thread shows you have.
I have made no assertion of whether Binocular is a good thing or represents any value for the Champion Hurdle. You are introducing a tit for tat into my point.
Yes, i knocked 3 of their performances in comparison with Binocular. He didn’t just beat them; he absolutely destroyed them in a manner unseen in a 2 mile hurdle for quite some time. If you can’t appreciate that there is not much I can say.
So, what you are in effect saying is no race in the National Hunt season proves anything unless it is run at Cheltenham?

Not at all – however you must surely agree the race would have a greater relevance in terms of the festival had it been staged where originally planned at Cheltenham and had it been the original field size.
As for your assertion that he "destroyed" the field that is a subjective view – but hey that is the great joy of our sport – it is based on opinions.
I know it is a cliché but at the end of the day a horse can only beat what is put in front of it and that is what Binocular did today. However after the race even AP was only talking about “potential”.
I apologise if you thought I was introducing a “tit for tat” – it was just an open question to see just how good you did think his performance today was in terms of the CH.
December 21, 2008 at 03:35 #198379Paul,
I wouldn’t back any horse for any race in 3 months time at 6/4

That is one thing we agree on anyway – have a good holiday season
