Sad to hear that Ray Reardon has died, aged 91.
He was World Champion six times and did a huge amount to popularise snooker via the likes of “Pot Black” and playing exhibitions around the country.
According to the “Daily Mirror”, he even made a century break last year!
July 20, 2024 at 14:50 #1702290Really sorry to hear that, I liked Ray, or should I say Dracula.
As cork says, 6 times World Champion and a credit to the sport.
Condolences to all his family and friends.July 20, 2024 at 15:56 #1702319We saw him at Stansted airport, a good few years back, when he was playing full time, he had his cue with him in a protective case, obviously didn’t trust baggage handlers with it. He sat opposite us very quietly and nobody really bothered him. Can imagine in this day and age the selfie brigade not letting him sit so quietly .
He was one of the greats along with Steve Davis, boring old Cliff Thorburn and my favourite ‘The Hurricane’ Higgins.
All thoughts with his family and close friends.
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...July 20, 2024 at 19:21 #1702337RIP, to a gentleman.
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysJuly 20, 2024 at 19:37 #1702339A legend of the game and a true gentleman to boot. Rest in peace, Ray.
July 21, 2024 at 00:02 #1702344He had an amazing life, worked in the pits and was once buried after a cave in.
Ex Police officer, then 6 times champion. Assisted Ronnie to a couple of his..What a guy.
My memories of seeing him on pot black inspired me, watching those grey balls being potted in black and white.
Ive never made a ton, but hes inspired me again as he did one last year at 90.
Hope I have another 20 odd years to try..
Bless him, a great guy.July 21, 2024 at 08:57 #1702352RIP Ray.
Used to own a book by him on how to play snooker, had another world champion (Dennis Taylor) signed it.

I recall him saying that he spent the time awaiting rescue by playing frames of ‘mental snooker’
Came across as a likeable gent and while his humorous asides during matches were endearing he was the fiercest of competitors: the intense look in his eyes behind the quips and smiles told the tale
Not quite a Maximum age-wise but 140+ anyway
RIP
July 21, 2024 at 11:24 #1702365The first Champion I remember, Ray with Eddie Charlton, John Spencer, Fred Davis and all. But it was his personality (and colour TV) that imo popularised the game. Pot Black inspired my dad to make us kids (I think we were about 7 years old) a half size snooker table we used to put on top of the kitchen table. Can’t say I was ever any good though. 35 was my highest score.
RIP Ray.
Value Is EverythingJuly 21, 2024 at 13:09 #1702383One of the famous early faces when snooker took off following wider adoption of colour TV. Seemed a gent. RIP
July 21, 2024 at 21:14 #1702416He had retired before I started watching the sport but he was no doubt an influence on many of those who I grew up with.
Brilliant to hear that he was still knocking centuries in at 90.
July 21, 2024 at 21:21 #1702417RIP Ray
Blind Dave will tell me all about you tomorrow night at Snooker

Many thanks for the autograph my mum got you to sign in 1983 at a Bernie Inns in Halifax. Ray mentioned the bloke he was with that night on the TV programme the other night. I believe he must have stayed with him when he won the 1978 World Champs in Sheffield. This guy chauffeured him to and from Halifax in his Roller each day he had a match.
I dug the autograph out and it was dated ’83.

Steve (interesting) Davis and “Boring” Cliff Thornburn stayed at a local hotel once together, where I live. The hotel has since been pulled down for a new estate. Anyway when they stayed there my mum used to be head waitress, (doing silver service), and was good at her job.
Steve Davis stayed mostly in his room, while Cliff Thornburn was a real gentleman, polite etc.

That’ll be her suit brought for her birthday then, and not the other meaning I take it.
We really need Chezza back to keep you in order, Hughessy

P.S. I bet you never let Alex hear you say such things. When he was younger.
