Small fields the order of the day due to continuing quick ground. It happens and sometimes it’s a chance to take a step back from the action. Musselburgh had a problem with their watering system, I suspect a pump breakdown, so today’s meeting is off meaning more mundane duties around the house!

Just a 3 runner contest on Thursday, though all appear progressive.

Having played with filters over time I’ve reverted to the ‘Compleat Handicapper’ method by the book and rating the top 6 in the betting, with a rider that equal 6th place are included. Added rule for me is that I rate at least 1/3 of the field in big handicaps. It certainly filters out the duffers and since I started on a new notebook* (May 25th) top rated is 32 from 176 returning 222.24 pts to a 1pt level stake.

* Always do it with pen and paper, spreadsheets don’t do it for me!

Do you know what’s happening to Paul Robsons stable? I just checked out Ocavango Delta’s form and was worried to see that he’s pulled up recently: hope he’s ok as I fell in love with him when we visited the stable a couple of years ago. TRP says Robson has no entries so not sure who I can contact to find out how he is.

Paul Robson handed in his license a couple of months ago. He had lost a few horses, wasn’t able to make it pay and is joining Nicky Richards’s stable in a supporting role.

I beat the Mirror to the story by a few days as one of my ‘contacts’ alerted me!

Not sure there’s a trainer set up to take over at Hazelrigg. Adam Nicol was mentioned as a possible, but I believe his parents own the place at Seahouses and there’s recently been significant upgrades so I would have thought he would stay put.

A rattling good finish to the Goodwood week with 3 top rated winner, plus 2nd top Evening Saigon winnnig the Stewards Cup at 16/1. Cream of the crop was arguably Haku who bagged me good points in the Daylight Cup when 3rd at 125/1 at Newmarket. All weather from doesn’t always transfer to the turf, but at that price there’s a bit of room to manoeuvre!
